Day in Fandom History: March 17…

When Marco receives a ransom note in the mail about his dragon bike, Nachos, being held prisoner, he and Star travel to the Neverzone, team up with an old friend, and rescue his dragon-cycle from potential harm. “Ransomgram” premiered on this day, 6 Years Ago.

So I see this storyboard panel going about a lot lately as supposed proof Marco Diaz was meant to be trans. Which look, yes, this was the official storyboard panel but it is from the Season 4 episode of SVTFOE entitled “Ransomgram”. The crew of SVTFOE addressed the trans Marco theory at a CalArts panel during Season 3 where they expressed that;

1. Marco was intended to be a cis male character with feminine interests.

2. They were happy trans people could see themselves in Marco.

3. They would try not to disprove the theory.

The chances are, at most this storyboard panel was the crew just throwing the trans Marco side of the fandom a little bit of evidence for their theory but given what we know, it remains doubtful the plan was to make it canon. This particular episode was directed by Sage Cotugno who is trans masc themself (although they came out after the show) and would on occasion interact with the trans Marco tag on Tumblr.

Something I’m not sure of, is whether this colouring was intended for the final episode. It definitely didn’t make the final cut and I have asked Sage about this but haven’t received a response. I am remembering something about Sage though.

So back during Gravity Falls, there was an episode that featured Cupid which Sage Cotugno was a storyboard artist on. The pendant for the necklace, which Sage drew was the trans symbol. Disney changed this so it was an overlapping male and female symbol.

The above panel would serve as a pretty glaring confirmation of Marco being trans, especially with the already existent theory. While trans Marco wasn’t intended to be canon, I think it is pretty safe to assume that Disney may have censored the above storyboard based on past behaviour and what this colour choice would insinuate.

I’ve watched “Star VS The Forces of Evil” episodes 3-4 season 4. In the first part of the first episode, Star takes her mom home and she starts remembering things. Star is nervous about how things will go with Eclipsa and with Globgor, everything seems to be well – even better than Star anticipated, but then Moon says her goodbyes and leaves, telling Star that she doesn’t in fact trust the new queen. In the next part Star, Marco and Tom want to finally take that “picture from the future” and are preparing for a beach day (Spoilers!), but nothing goes as planned, because Eclipsa captured Rhombulus, wanting him to release her husband from a crystal and he, obviously, doesn’t want to. Star tries to settle their conflict but they still fight and in the end, Eclipsa switches their bodies and starts decrystalizing Globgor herself, but then Star says that people (including her – Star) will never trust Eclipsa if she does such things, so she stops and lets Rhombulus go. Tom and Marco organize beach day for Star inside with a kiddie pool. Lovely Tomco moments included. In the first part of the second episode, Marco has to go and save Nachoes from the Neverzone and Star wants to go with him (because there he’s adult and handsome). They go to another dimension and he “summons” his friend – Brunzetta – a fierce thunder goddess – and they all three go on an adventure. The plot is fine and Marco learns a lesson and so on, but the important thing is – Star has so much bisexual energy in this episode – she definitely can’t decide who she likes more – adult Marco or a muscly lady with an axe! The last part gives us some Star and Tom relationship development. Star is stuck with the Lucitor family because of a lava storm and it turns out that Tom’s mother is worried about them, because Tom knew about Star kissing Marco and told his mother but not Star, because Star didn’t tell him. He also says a wonderful phrase: “If I had kissed Marco, wouldn't you want me to tell you?” – so, yes guys, it’s a possibility. Well, everything ends up well, they reconcile.

So, I just got shown what the storyboard for this shot looked like, and...

yeah.

In Princess Turdina’s first appearance, it’s possible that the thought process didn’t go any further than, “Let’s have Marco be surprisingly comfortable with being dressed as a girl.” But as the show has gone on, it’s gotten less and less ambiguous what the exact intention of the writers is.

#bi star butterfly

I mean, you can disagree with me, but I think that Star Butterfly is canonically bisexual.

In Ransomgram (season 4 episode 5), Marco and Star enter the Abs Dimension, where Marco summons his friend, Brunzetta. In the Abs Dimension, both Marco and Brunzetta are buff and rugged, something Star seems to be into. As we all know, Star finds Marco incredibly attractive when he’s in the Abs Dimension. When she looks at Marco, dreamy music plays and bubbles and sparkles float around Marco’s head. The exact same thing happens when Star looks at Brunzetta.

And, to top it all off, Star’s blue eyes get stripes of pink and purple in them, making the colors of the bisexual pride flag.

Star was never officially announced to be bisexual, meaning that it isn’t officially canon. But in opinion, it is explicitly clear that Star is crushing on Brunzetta in this scene. I consider it canon that Star is bi (or maybe pan).
