As usual, he’s shut up in his office with the load ofpaperwork he has taken over from Hisagi-fukutaicho.
You’ve told Kaname a countless number of times to takebreaks in between and to let his subordinates do their work. And as usual, youwonder whether he is as deaf as he is blind to your pleas.
Enough is enough, however. The sun is shining, half of theninth division is enjoying the light snowfall and the scene outside thebuilding looks beautiful. Making up your mind, you stride towards yourcaptain’s office purposefully and knock on the door. A slightly distracted“Come in.” prompts you inside.
“___ sanseki.” Kaname Tosen acknowledges you and continueswriting as you close the door. When on duty, he’s your captain and you, histhird seat. Only when you both have retired for the night does he go fromTosen-taicho to your lover Kaname.
“Taicho,” You begin; the exasperation in your voice appearsto go unnoticed, “Your officers miss you.”
“I hardly think so.” He calmly answers as he pushes asidethe paper he’s done scribbling on. “My appearance, and the lack of it hashardly affected their enthusiasm-”
“Well, it has affected some officers.” You say pointedly. The corner of his mouth twitches.
“Central 46, unfortunately, wants me to oversee the pile ofreports our division has to submit next week, so I’ll be stuck here for anotherhour at the most-”
“Kaname.” The use of his first name makes him look up. Yourarely call him by his first name during work hours, unless you’re absolutelyserious about your requests.
“You’ve been in here for nearly five hours. Have a cup oftea with me. Outside.” You firmly say, putting your hands on your hips.
Sensing your determination, he sighs (you detect some reliefin it). “I’ll join you in five minutes; it need to put everything away and itdoes take time.” He says reassuringly as you open your mouth.
“As long as you come out…” You say and walk out, feelingmollified. As you make your way towards the kitchen amidst the variousshinigami who are moving here and there, you bump into Hisagi and Atsuko.
“___-san!” Atsuko grins at you, her face flushed and bright.“Where were you? Hisagi-kun and I were having a snowball fight! Come and joinus!”
“I was going to have a cup of tea actually-”
“Brilliant, I could use something hot in my system too-”
“Taicho’s giving me company-”
“The more the merrier, then!”
“Atsuko-san, I think Hinamori-san had mentioned she wasbaking something for you?” Hisagi gently steers the excited-now confused- fifthseat in the opposite direction. As they go, he looks back at you and winks. Bless understanding friends, you thinkas you beam back at him.
The kitchen is empty, much to your relief. Peace and quiet at last, you think asyou start rummaging through the cupboard for the tea leaves.
At the very moment you spot the tea leaves (who thought ofputting them at the very back?) you sense a familiar reiatsu behind you. “HereI am.” Kaname says from behind you, his voice full of mirth.
“Justice has been served.” You roll your eyes as you procurethe leaves. “And here I was, thinking you’d be side tracked again.”
“It would be a terrible injustice to not use an opportunitydangling in front of me.” He chuckles as you turn around to face him. His faceslightly sobers. “Have I been neglecting you lately? If so, I’m very sorry-”
“It’s nothing like that!” You reassure him hurriedly, “I’mjust concerned about you overworking yourself! All this paperwork, the tripsyou make with Aizen-taicho and Ichimaru-taicho…it’s been tiring you out andall I want you to do is make sure you take care of yourself properly.” Youfinish, watching his expression grow more sombre.
Before you can contemplate on whether you’ve hit a nervesomewhere, he leans forward and tips your chin up to plant a chaste kiss onyour lips.
“Kaname…” You speak his name softly, concern welling up insideyou. He’s been looking more and more weary as of late. And what’s worse is thathe refuses to share what’s stressing him out like this. And you’re absolutely surethat Zaraki-taicho is not the only root cause to this.
“I’m sorry.” He whispers, touching his forehead to yours. “I’vebeen making you worry. I’m truly sorry.”
“Tell me what’s happening to you. Maybe I can help.”
“I’ll tell you some other time. I promise you. I just haveto get a few more things done.” He tries to reassure you. You sigh, but do notpush the subject. He has always kept his promises to you, so why would he breakthis one?
“Thank you for letting me love you.” He continues andpresses his lips to your forehead, “Thank you for staying by my side. Thank youfor loving me back. Thank you.”
“Oi, Atsuko, you said you’d help me illustrate the coverpage today, where are-gah!” The both of you jump at the newcomer’s voice. Whoeverit is frantically apologises and goes away.
Kaname straightens up, much to your disappointment. “I thinkI’ve taken enough of a break-”
“You’ve not yet had tea with me!” You say hurriedly, “Ihaven’t even made tea yet!”
“You mean I haven’t made tea yet.” Kaname raises an eyebrow at you.
You blush. “Just because the tealeaves got caught on fire that one time-”
“Five times, ___. Muguruma-taicho would have thrown a fit by the fourthtime.”
“Well, I’m sure with enough practice-”
“___, we do not have enough of abudget to restock our tea leaves repeatedly,” Kaname sighs and moves you aside,“Now if you stay, I’ll show you how to make tea without burning anything. Payattention.”
“Sure thing, hypocrite.” Youtease him with a satisfied grin as the lesson begins.
