Ranu Mukherjee is a multimedia artist exploring the effects of global capitalism on traditional Indian and Eastern cultures. She makes hybrid films, paintings, silkscreens on paper, and collaborative projects that use strong, dramatic color to juxtapose modern and traditional objects. Her series “Absorption into the Nomadic and the Luminous” (2011)—including Kiss us with your mouth of nectar—investigates the nomad in its various guises and its relationship to modernity and urban life. Alter-Circuit is part of Asian Contemporary Art Week and is co-organized by the Asian Contemporary Arts Consortium. ACAW begins this weekend with an artist who cannot speak english is no artist a symposium featuring a wide variety of speakers and topics.

The symposium borrows its title from Croatian artist Mladen Stilinović’s 1994 embroidery on banner work, An Artist Who Cannot Speak English Is No Artist, which sarcastically comments on the English-dominated art world circle. Artists, writers, critics, scholars, educators, and translators present their recent projects and researches that seek to explore how the role of language, notions and issues of translation and mistranslation, interpretation and misinterpretation, and their philosophies interact with each other in art and cultural productions, in the special context of Asia.

Today, artists and curators are actively playing the role of the interpreter, translating between images and texts of the historical and cultural materials. What matters the most is how to make relevant and meaningful these practices that truly challenge the cultural stereotypes and social conventions.

Three distinctive panels are composed of a series of presentation-conversations by speakers include Lee Ambrozy, Kota Ezawa, Taraneh Hemami, An Xiao Mina, Ranu Mukherjee, Stephanie Syjuco, Sergio de la Torre, Xiaoze Xie, and Xu Tan.
