2012 rant time

it's kinda sad to me how raph's anger is treated by his family. They're just like "bro chill out" but it's not that simple. I know how isolating it can be to be different from others in a way that you can't really describe or explain correctly, it's poignant and isolating. And his anger isn't a choice, but they don't really offer him much in the way of tools to manage his anger in the beginning. Sure, later he eventually gets a mantra from master splinter, but thats way later in his journey with managing his anger. And, like me, he doesn't know how to justify it, so he finds a way to justify it. He tells himself that his anger makes him a better fighter, but he's an impressive fighter regardless. He just can't understand why something that is so easy for his brothers is hard for him, and I feel that. I've never been as angry as raph, but I have been as lonely, and it truly is miserable. His brothers don't get him, that much is true. They don't seem to understand that he's not trying to be a problem, he's not trying to mess things up, it's just a part of him that he can't articulate, and that he has little means to control. It's a skill that he has to learn.

And he's clearly got some guilt resulting from his anger, he doesn't want to be angry. Otherwise, he wouldn't deny being angry like he does in "The Good, the Bad, and Casey Jones". And they have the internet, clearly, so why doesn't anyone bother looking up ways to help? Splinter says in "Turtle Temper" "to let the words wash over him like a river over stone" or something like that, but he doesn't offer much more explanation. Furthermore, his brothers still push his buttons, knowing he has a short fuse. Coming from someone with siblings, there are ways to pick on your siblings without really hurting them. Even with an angrier sibling. It requires a lot of effort on all parts, but it looks like he's mostly working on his own when it comes to keeping his anger in check.
