Raphael Rogiński - Žaltys
I was first made aware of Raphael Rogiński via the great writer Philip Sherburne, who recommended Rogiński's (still somewhat hard to come by) Plays John Coltrane And Langston Hughes.African Mystic Music, which was a fascinating (and kinda daring) collection. The Polish guitarist's latest LP, Žaltys, is similarly great, filled with spectral/skeletal sounds, seemingly conjured up spontaneously on the spot, but not without a compositional feel. Rogiński's electric guitar work (occasionally accompanied by the enigmatic vocals of Indrė Jurgelevičiūtė) can be languid and lovely at times, only to move into more percussive and abstract zones. Whatever he does, it's all beautiful and strange and singular.
