Why Raspberry Pi?
Probably like a lot of people, the term "Raspberry Pi" has been echoing in the background for a while now, but due to the large amount of crap in day to day life has been subconsciously filtered out by my brains relevance detector. Last month (February 2013) marks the point where the irreverent become relevant, at least for me.
A mate of mine on Facebook made a brief comment on how he had finally put his Raspberry Pi, a $35 computer, to good use by turning it into a Point of Sale system. As luck would have it, a number of our clients were also talking to us about Point of Sale systems at work. "Wouldn't it be nice to have an affordable Point of Sale system?" they remarked.
Many small business owners feel locked and chained to their Point of Sale systems and service providers due to the significant costs in their initial purchase. This has made many Point of Sale (POS) service providers after sales care particularly lackluster, however there is little the client can do when changing a POS service provider often means changing your POS system. I chewed on our clients proposition for a few weeks about a budget POS system that would give them the financial capacity to switch POS service providers if or when they became dissatisfied with their after sales service. Then it hit me, that Facebook comment about the Raspberry Pi. I was left wondering what is a Raspberry Pi, and how can it help give our clients a greater degree of freedom? With this problem to solve, my journey into Raspberry Pi began.
