Hey for your rat enclosure problems. Put a window screen on top and weight it down or wire-tie it it down. It works like a little roof that's next to impossible to chew through. If you want to go huge use a screen door.
That’s a good idea; thanks!
They are such good girls. Such good energetic girls. They’ll suffer themselves to be held or petted for approx. 5 seconds and then they’re wriggling off to do important Rat Things like chewing massive holes in the play blanket. They don’t seem to mind being picked up but the minute one sets them down, they’re right back doing whatever they were doing before (usually scurrying towards someplace that’s difficult to get them out of). I’m told this is a normal function of young female rats. I love them so much.
Protip: when it is windy, snowing or there is a ton of white snow and it is reflectibg the light/shit keeps geting into your eyes use sunglasses
Same with biking no flies in your eyes
I wish rats were a more common pet so I could petsit rats
I've even considered hiding rats in the storm shelter cuz my parents hardly go in there, but unfortunately they do in fact go in there occasionally. It's mostly a storage room
I need rat face for happiness, need to feed rattie meals
Btw here was my favorite dinner to feed my ratties:
Take a ramekin or small rat proof, deep, heavy dish
-lentils in water
-canned fish (usually mackerel or sardines, but I like to eat the sardines) (small pieces for them to share (adjust portions as needed, rats don't need a lot of protein they just think it's really yummy. Too much protein isnt good for them, they eat lots of carbs and veggies) You can also substitute the fish for dried crickets, meal worms, and other bugs sold for them to safely eat.
-blueberries, grapes, or a little bit of some other fruit (1-2 small fruits per rat)
I think that's all that I can remember, and then a full dish of rat kibble for them to eat as well
I liked to cook the fish in the lentil water, I don't think the rats cared whether or not the canned fish was warm, but idk it was a good part of my routine. Lentils, or more commonly peas, in water are a common easy game for the rats called pea fishing. Make sure it's shallow enough that they can put their arms in without dunking their face in the water, maybe an inch deep at most. Cool water makes this great for summer. I wonder if rats like frozen peas
All parts of a corn cob are also safe for them to eat, but they can't have dried corn if I remember correctly. Kernels and cob are safe for them.
Be careful with grains like bread cuz they're extremely filling, give them Itty bitty portions.
Most of your rats diet should be rat kibble, the best ones I've been told are Oxbow essentials and Science selective. I personally bought them Oxbow, they're little triangular kibble pieces that are really easy for them to grab
I can't wait to own rats again 🥺
Rat help
I have a really good recourse for rat care but it’s from the UK and so I’m having a little trouble with the food section. What are some good brands in the US that are nutritionally complete for a healthy rat diet?
Whats the best Food for a mouse or Rat? What brand is good for them, something balanced, without alot of corn and hay? Ive heard Lab blocks are good? But what brand? Anyone know?
I wanna re do my rat cage!!! My boys deserve something nice. anyone got good ideas?? That are also inexpensive?? Bc my boys are also destructive so like...
ahh so i see you posting a lot about your rats and i was just wondering if you had any advice to give to someone who is about to get rats? i just bought a cage, but dont know what kind of bedding or toys would be best to begin with. what stuff have you used for your rats that have been safe and that they've enjoyed?
OK it finally uploaded. I go over the toys mostly in this. Forgot to mention, but gender does matter when it comes to what to put int he cage. Boys tend to be lazier so hammocks and hide should be your focus. where ass females are more active so toys and things to climb on and run through are better for them.
Heres the patterns I used for their hammocks
I completely forgot to go over their bedding, but I use either fleece, or flat towels (no loops, can snag claws).Just absolutely NO PINE OR CEDAR. Those same chemicals that make it smell nice burn your rats respiratory system and can lead to health problems. Aspen or paper is better if you are doing that kind of bedding instead of cloth.
Make sure all wire flooring is covered with plastic or cloth because the wires are terrible for ratty feet and can cause nasty sores.
Hope this helps a bit!
