> You sit on the sidewalk, your staff across your lap and a dented collection cup in front of you.
> You sit criss-cross, sort of. One leg is tucked in normally, but the other is held out in an awkward angle.
> You’re not paying much attention to the trolls passing by, hardly noticing if anyone drops anything in your cup. You’re lost in your own thoughts, for better or for worse. Probably for worse because you look miserable.
> You crouch in an alley a block or so down from the bookstore you just left, leaning on your staff and just fuckin’ crying your eyes out.
> You can’t breathe, you don’t know if it’s because you’re crying so hard or because you’re dying or something. Either way...Boy, you’re not having a good time.
Rati best pick up line go
“wh- pickup line?? i, uh-- fuck, what makes ya think i know any pickup lines??”
Rati nursed a bubbling pot of soup in the center of their small camp, as Dolari returned carrying a large bundle of sticks. Firewood for the remainder of the night, until the heat of the day seeped in.
Rati could hear their other two companions settling in- Terran was making his bed in his tent, while Harkin was still struggling to set the thing up. They’d refused help, having been shown how half a dozen times now- They wanted to do it on their own.
Dolari set down the bundle near the fire and straightened, brushing bits of bark off her dress. “How’s dinner coming?”
“Fine. This venison Terran got is gonna turn out good.”
Rati turned his head to look up at her- Only to see an unfamiliar figure looming behind her.
His eyes went wide and she turned to look- Just in time to be struck in the face with a metal club.
Time seemed to simultaneously slow down, and speed up. Rati jumped to his feet, he heard Harkin screaming and watched as Dolari was knocked aside into Terran’s tent. He backed away, into something- No, someone- And before he could even turn, a mace met his upper arm, he heard and felt the bone crack.
He watched as Terran stepped out of his tent, the moonlight glinting off the blade of his sword. Both subjugs- The one who had struck Dolari, and the one who had struck Rati himself- Honed in on him. As he was focused on them, a third came from behind, and struck him in the head.
Rati backed away further, finding no one else behind him. Dolari, still conscious and bleeding from her head, clawed her way forward, reaching out to him.
“Rati! Help me, help me, please!”
Time seemed to resume as normal, her voice ringing oddly loud in his ears. He wanted to run past the subjugs beating Terran with their maces, grab her hand and pull her to her feet and run with her- Harkin was lying dead with an arrow in his throat-
One of the subjugs turned to Dolari, bringing their mace down on her arm. She screamed, but Rati was already turning to run, without her. He was now all too aware of her screams of pain, his own ragged breath in his chest, and the tears already streaming down his face.
He ran, unhindered. He expected to be chased, thought they’d catch up to him any second, a mace was just moments away from hitting him in the head-
But no, he ran to the sheer ravine they’d crossed over just half an hour before. He skidded to a halt, realizing he’d failed to run to the bridge, having been so convinced he wouldn’t make it this far.
An arrow met his shoulder from behind, and the sheer force knocked him down into the ravine below.
Rati do you curl into a ball when you get frightened? If not, how DO you react when scared?
“eh... i reckon it’d be better if i curled up int’a ball. ‘cuz usually i start cryin’.”
“maybe i ought’a try doin’ that. not that i can move fast enough. an’ what the hell would i do with my staff..? i don’t want it t’get broken.”
“fuck, i’m really considerin’ this, huh...anyway, i’ll shut m’ trap now.”
