Recipe #112 - Apple & Rhubarb Crumble from The 1940s Experiment
I made this for dessert the night we had the Hunt Pie. I had pilfered some rhubarb from my parent’s garden (they were away so I was encouraged to help myself), and had apples languishing in the salad bowl. I didn’t have as much rhubarb as the recipe called for and should have made the weight up with apples, but for some reason I didn’t.
The biggest problem came when I ran out of butter as well. The crumble contained an alarmingly high flour to oats ratio, but I think with more butter it would all have worked better, even if there was about two thirds crumble to one third fruit.
I also whipped up some custard - the kind you make with custard powder, it just seemed right for this recipe. Drowned in the custard this was actually pretty nice.
