Caged Asparagus

Rats or squirrels were eating my precious asparagus. I had to do something drastic to ensure that they didn’t eat everything, since if the crown doesn’t get fed by a few stalks, I assume it would quickly stop producing.

So I got some 1/4 in. hardware cloth and screen and made these cages.

I’m so pleased that I’ve been able to harvest about 6 spears since doing that!

This may look measly, but it’s enough for a single serving. And most importantly, they’re continuing to spring up so the crowns are still viable. Win! 

At some point I’ll stop harvesting and remove the cages so the fern-like stalks can do their magic for next year.

After posting about bagging my pumpkins, I went out to check on the gourd and found that it had already reached the capacity of the big sack! I was afraid I’d have to cut this one off too, but I figured out that folding it down and “rolling” it off worked (pumpkins have prickly skin so sliding the bag off just didn’t work!).

I hope it’s big and firm enough now to withstand any curious critters.

In the Bag

I planted sugar pumpkins again this year, and I’m happy to see I’m getting some already. The last time I planted some, “creatures” attempted to eat them, scratching the surface. So this time I decided I’d try to protect them during their initial soft phase.

I purchased these cloth sacks from Amazon. The first ones to arrive were 4x6″. The others are much larger: 8x12″. They’re not intended for rodents, but more for insects and maybe birds. The fabric is pretty tough, and with its fine weave, I guess a little harder for teeth to gnaw through (she says hopefully).

I put the small one on the pumpkin and at that time it had plenty of room (the pumpkin was probably about 1.25″ diameter then...). It seems I checked these in the morning before work, and thought to myself, “I’ll need to swap that out when I get home.”

But by that evening, it was already pressing against the bag--so tight I had to cut it off! Here it is in the 4x6″ sack, trying to bust out!

Now it’s in the larger sack which I think will suffice until the skin is hard enough to ward off the rodents. At least I hope so.

The above photo was taken Tuesday the 26th, and the below was taken yesterday the 30th. So you can see I will need to keep a keen eye on this--it will outgrown the big sack shortly!

I’m so hopeful that I will actually get some tomatoes for myself this year!
