         you  can  spot  the  strawberry  hair  from  anywhere,  especially  gleaming  in  the  bright  late  evening  autumn  sun  as  max  sits  crisscrossed  out  in  the  back  yard  picking  at  grass.  it’s  a  different  day  in  autumn,  it’s  her  birthday.  october  as  her  birth  month  always  did  seem  to  fit  her,  that’s  what  her  dad,  sam,  always  said--  she  was  his  pumpkin  baby  or  whatever  embarrassing  name  like  that  he  had  for  her  when  she  was  just  a  toddler.  that  was,  before  he  seemed  to  just  go  blank  and  forget  he  had  a  daughter.  this  birthday  sucks  like  it  did  the  last  five  birthdays  ago.   all  those  other  kids  have  big  parties  at  the  skating  rink.  actual  cake  and  friends  and  stuff.  and  her...  well  she  is  just  here  pretending  she’s  not  sulking  about  nobody  really  caring  it’s  her  birthday.  and  then  there’s  the  thought  of...

       THUD. 

she  didn’t  even  hear  him  come  up  behind  her.  she  was  that  deep  in  thought.  something  gets  dropped  into  her  lap  and  she’s  jolting  upwards  from  her  slouched  posistion,  ocean  eyes  falling  on  whatever  it  is  and  then  they  go  widening.

          ❝  i-  ❞  max  stumbles  on  the  one  letter  for  what  seems  like  FOREVER  when  the  shock  of  what  she  sees  in  her  lap  is  trying  to  process  inside  her  mind.  it’s  the  giant  limited  time  dc  comic  book  edition  that  she’d  been  wanting  but  was  never  going  to  get  long  as  neil  had  something  to  do  about  it.  he’d  never  pay  $30  for  something  like  this.  and  on  her  birthday.  and  from  billy.  scrambling  to  her  feet,  her  face  perplexed,  glancing  back  and  forth  from  the  awesome  thing  in  her  hands  to  the  person  who  has  given  her  it.  

         ❝  no  way!  what  is  this?  ❞  staring  up  at  him  like  he’s  a  weirdo.  why  on  earth  would  he  even  care?  ❝  i’m..  confused.  what  did  you  do?  lace  it  with--  i  don’t  know...  poison  or  something?  ❞  it’s  hard  to  be  grateful  when  she  thinks  he’s  actually  capable  of  doing  that.  eyes  flicker  back  to  the  book  in  her  hands,  giving  it  a  funny  look,  like  it  really  might  be.  who  knows  with  him.

seeing two people at her locker,she huffs,grossed out seeing tammy walker talking to some dude who wasn't her jock boyfriend,greg. she strides up,chains making noise as she strolls over to her destination - noting her locker was being used as some sort of comfort for random guy,tammy's behind leaning against where the lock was,she makes herself known with an obnoxious cough to get their attention,''what do you want,freakazoid?''tammy hisses,clearly annoyed,and scout smiles politely at the 5'7 blonde haired blue eyed cheerleader,voice sickly sweet and sarcastic.

''your ass is leaning against my locker,which i know you know is mine,considering the lovely prank you pulled the other day with some not so nice words on it. heard you had to paint it over yourself.''scout deadpans,green hues lighting up at her reaction,her cheeks are reddened,embarrassed,and she moves but the guy who she was with didn't.

''mind moving out of the way? would really appreciate it.''

It had been a particularly violent night at the Buckley residence and Robin had the bruises under her clothes to prove it. The old man had been more intoxicated than normal and once he’d started beating on her it seemed like forever until he finally stopped and passed out. The first thing she did when she came to on the living room floor was bail. She didn’t want to be there when he eventually woke up and decided to start on round two. Fingernails dug into her knuckles from how hard she was holding on to the metal links of the swing. Tears of frustration and pain streamed down Robin’s cheeks now that she was finally alone. Finally free to do so without anyone seeing her. Without any consequences. She wasn’t really moving just rocking slightly back and forth as she dug the heels of her old red sneakers into the dirt beneath her.

Breath hitched in her chest as she heard the sound of footsteps crunching the gravel behind her. Wiping at her eyes furiously to get rid of any evidence of vulnerability she turned to see who it was. Billy Hargrove. What was he doing there at that time of night? She laughed bitterly. That would make two teens breaking the Hawkins curfew. Robin could care less. She watched him walk across the park puffing on a cigarette and called out to him. “Hargrove.” She didn’t really like or dislike Billy. He was an ass but never to her. She just had no opinion of him. Under normal circumstances, the two would cross paths but never talk. Robin found herself happy to see another person despite originally coming there for the solitude to lick her wounds. Company was company and she didn’t really want to be alone.

It’s been a long and fun, but tiring day, falling asleep in the arm chair with some cheesy christmas movie playing on the television. When Billy had arrived to collect Max, she doesn’t know, but the warmth the blanket draped over her offers is enough to make her shift and pull it closer, appreciating it deep down with the slight chill in the house this time of year. They’d promised to visit during the holidays and with christmas right around the corner, Joyce had been more than happy to drive them to Hawkins to celebrate it with friends for a few days around Christmas.

Had it woken her though, she would’ve been more than happy to check in with him and thank him for that, even wish him a happy christmas ⏤ or was it merry christmas? ⏤ and give him a present as is tradition for this time of year. But as it stood, the gentle gesture hadn’t been enough to pull her from sleep, and she would just have to catch him later to give him the gift.

                  fists  clench  at  sides,  knuckles  digging  into  the  denim  to  keep  from  flailing  her  arms  out  of  pure  anger  like  she  wants  to.  because  this  ...  this  just  sets  her  off.  finally,  she  breaks  from  being  stoic  ever  since  what  happened  twenty  minutes  ago  before  neil  stormed  off  to  work.  she  completely  loses  it,  ❝  OH.  says  you,  THE  KING  of  not  giving  a  shit.  i’ve  cared  about  you  way  more  than  you  have  ever  cared  for  me,  billy.  every  time  i  try  to  help  you,  you--  you  just  push  me  away.  so  WHAT’S  the  point?!  ❞  it  makes  her  blow  up  in  an  angry  volcano  because  it’s  so  unfair.  she’s  tried  helping  him  every  time  neil  lays  him  out  like  no  father  should  ever  do,  but ...  the  first  time  she  doesn’t  and  acts  like  it  didn’t  even  happen,  he’s  making  her  out  to  seem  like  she  doesn’t  ‘give  a  shit’  when  she  does.  she  ALWAYS  does  and  she’s  outraged  because  of  it.  max  wouldn’t  even  be  admitting  she  cares  for  him  if  she  wasn’t  so  angry  because  of  what  he  just  said.  ❝  AT  LEAST  I  HAVE  TRIED  giving  a  shit.  you  can’t  even  say  the  same  for  me,  because  you  never  have. ❞

　　　　That was weird, Max had no other way of describing it. When Billy had walked into her room with grilled cheese sandwiches and hot chocolate, she had almost found herself checking whether that really wasn’t the time he finally had decided to try and poison her. Instead, she knew what that was probably about — clearly, she hadn’t been as good as she’d thought at hiding her bad mood. She’d barely said a word during all the way back from school nor tried to change the radio station like she usually did just to try and annoy Billy like every sister did — maybe that had been enough of a hint that she wasn’t quite alright. Or maybe it had been the way she’d basically locked herself in her room listening to ugly sad music at high volume.

　　　　« What is this…? » The question came out dumb, but it was mostly due to the sheer surprise that was painted on her face as the redhead moved the heavy blanket aside. Maybe she hadn’t concealed her teenage heartbreak all that well, but she hadn’t expected Billy to care either. The shock was almost enough to make Max stop thinking about the stupid guy she’d been secretly dating for weeks and how it had just ended horribly. She’d caught him cheating on her with a cheerleader, and maybe they’d never truly set rules but still… Max didn’t remember telling him it was okay to put his tongue in another girl’s mouth. Max quickly rubbed her eyes because no, she hadn’t been angry crying. « Uhm, thanks…? I’m not really hungry though. » But she still took a sip of the chocolate because, well, she wasn’t going to ruin the one time Billy was actually being nice.

Hiding behind the nearby pallet, Steve turns to glare at the other boy. He swears, if he didn't like the guy so much, he'd have gone over there and kicked his ass already. Shown him that he deserved some respect for already distracting the killer out there. Though, to be fair, Quentin had done more than his fair share. Not that Steve would admit that right now. "Hey asshole, why don't you focus on the gen and let me be the freaking distraction. Or do I need to come over there and scream at you to stop you summoning Kreuger on us again?"

               cheeks  hot  against  the  cold  weather,  her  adrenaline  has  spiked  ever  since  he  ended  up  finding  her.   at  first  she  was  wedged  between  the  dumpsters  outside  of  the  closed  arcade  to  shield  herself  from  the  wind,  until  a  stupid  pop  can  rolled  out  from  underneath  it  and  then  her  hiding  spot  got  completely  blown.  she  doesn’t  know  his  mood  right  now,  which  is  why  max  ended  up  climbing  up  on  top  of  the  giant  dumpsters  as  fast  as  she  could.  it  had  to  been  the  adrenaline  that  got  herself  up  here,  because  how  else  could  she  scramble  like  a  wild  animal  trying  to  protect  itself  up  on  something  so  high.  

          ❝  i  don’t  know.  i  wasn’t,  clearly.  but  at  least  it’s  better  here.  ❞   it’s  freezing,  her  teeth  are  chattering,  but  at  least  it  was  so  quiet  compared  to  billy  and  neil’s  yelling  then  neil’s  yelling  at  her  mom  and  whatever  those  loud  sounds  were  that  came  next.  max  couldn’t  take  it  at  that  point,  she  darted  out  the  front  door  and  made  a  run  for  it.  flight  or  fight.  she  doesn’t  want  him  to  know  it,  but  she’s  scared  of  him.  her  heart  is  pounding.  that’s  why  she’ll  play  dumb  as  best  as  she  can,  ❝  you  know.  no  yelling  or  arguing,  just  me  and  the  sound  of  whatever  has  been  over  there  rustling  in  the  woods.  ❞  sheepishly  chuckling,  eyes  flickering  to  the  line  of  the  woods  as  her  back  stays  pressed  against  the  wall  in  the  center  of  the  dumpster,  knees  drawn  to  her  small  frame--  clearly  it’s  all  well  thought  out  so  he  can’t  reach  her.  which  is  kinda  scary  itself,  thinking  about  a  coyote  coming  out  and  mauling  her  flesh  but  at  this  point...after  arguing  with  billy  for  days  on  end  and  this  tonight,  that  sounds  kind  of  pleasant.
