@ravireyes | Sunday, February 7th at Femenias Estate
It would be sufficient to say that his announcement to his cousins went exactly as he anticipated. Jessica was as softhearted and eager as ever. Kitty expressed her protective nature with vitriol. And Marcus, ever the fair man, lingered on cautious optimism. Ravi, however, was a separate point of concern. Not because his reaction was anything other than quintessentially Ravi. But because of what Rafael had said in deference to Kitty, and the way it seemed to strike a particular nerve. Nothing if not intuitive, Rafael was quick to shoot a separate text message after the fact. Hey, I didn’t mean you, okay? Come over for a late lunch at the estate. The Seraphim took pride in his well-tuned intuition, but when it came to his family, it was sensitive to even the smallest of disputes. And while Kitty’s reactions was perhaps the most disagreeable, she would undoubtedly bounce back. As was the nature of the temperamental likes of Rafael and Kitty.
But Rafael hit a specific nerve, one that undoubtedly pricked something in Ravi, and he refused to let it fester. Not after everything Ravi had done for him that week. When the security team informed him of his arrival, he sent word for Ravi to meet him in the Femenias’ kitchen. His first instinct was to send something obscenely luxurious, like an oversized edible arrangement or a fresh-off-the-rack men’s jacket. Yet he defers away from instinct, for something simpler and ‘from the heart’ as it were. And so, as his cousin-in-law steps into the grand kitchen, he’s met with a culinary hurricane. Three different loaves of bread sliced in different proportions, a smoking pan currently soaking in the sink, and a fresh griddle with burned cheese lining the edges of the pan. “Hey,” Rafael greets, proud for some reason or another, as he uses a spatula to pry his latest grilled cheese out of the pan. The spatula scraping along the burned bits, as he grins up at Ravi. “Perfect timing! I just finished your grilled cheese.” Eventually, he pries it out of the pan, and plucks the burnt grilled cheese on a porcelain plate. “Thought I’d say thank you, and make up for being an insensitive prick, with a homemade meal.”
