I’ve actually headcanoned this a little, like an off-hand “how did Scott McCall get into Lacrosse?” There are three possible outcomes: its the popular sport and Scott wants to be popular, Stiles was really into and Scott wants to do what Stiles does, or it was his father. And honestly, the headcanon I’m going for as a way to warm up to Mr. McCall is that he’s the reason for Scott’s love of lacrosse. There isn’t a set year in Scott’s life when his dad walked out on him, its said to be pretty early in life and the head injury right before Rafe left could indicate way too young. But there’s also season 1 to factor in, that at some point Scott was using a bus to be transported back and forth between his mother and his father. Then eventually I believe Rafe left for San Fransisco for good. I generally make the time Rafe left in Scott’s middle school years, so between ages 11 and 14. Yes, it being so popular in Beacon Hills is an added bonus, because any loser high school kid wants to be popular. Don’t deny it, the thought passes your mind at least once in the four years. At least the first two year, making the second year the year it needs to happen. Or the third or the fourth. But when Scott was about ten years old, Rafe McCall took Scott to see a Beacon Hills High lacrosse game. Rafe was on the team growing up and he wanted his son to enjoy the game as much as he did. This would be a memory that Scott would never forget, going to that one game and seeing how cool it was to be a lacrosse player. And to see how awesome the game was. For a few months, Rafe would help Scott learn but then work got in the way, then the drinking mixed in and the fighting. Eventually Scott learned to practice on his own and eventually, lacrosse became his thing instead of something he shared with his father.
