Cacao Beans Image shot: 2017, Cacao farm, Sri Lanka. Chocolate is the product of cacao beans. Harvesting and processing cocoa is a very labour intensive process. Cocoa trees need to be treated with peaticides and fungicides. Cocoa harvest is not retsriced to a harvest season, but done multiple times throughout season as they all ripen at different times. The pods are plucked with a curved knife on a long pole. The pods are removed and wet beans removed, the wet beans are then fermented in facilities. Mixing and applying these pesticides can be hazardous, clearing the vegetation and harvesting can also be dangerous. In the recent past the use of slavery and child labour was exposed to the whole world. The chocolate industries biggest players had vouched then to eradicate slavery and child labour. Yet most chocolate you buy still starts with child labour. The level of child labour in most cocoa growing regions is now higher than it was 10 years ago, inspite of the pledge against child labour and slavery by big brands such as Mars, Hersheys. Is your chocolate free from child labour??
