You wake up to an empty apartment and a message on your PADD from Jim. Showing the kid around campus – be back later – JTK.
Grinning to yourself, you get to your feet. Seems like they're getting along, at least, and thank God for that. This won't be easy no matter what, but it'll be a hell of a lot easier with his help, and you know his help will be worth more if they like each other.
On your way out of the room you catch sight of yourself in the mirror and laugh; you might feel better after resting for an hour, but you still look like death. On top of that, now that you don't feel sick from stress, you're hungry. You'll make yourself something to eat, you decide, and then you'll take a nice hot shower and clean yourself up some.
By the time you've showered and shaved, they're back, and you step into the living room only to suddenly have Joanna clinging to your legs. “Hi, Dad!” she says brightly, beaming up at you. “Are you feeling better?
“Yep,” you agree, and smile at her. “What were you up to while I was out?”
“Mr Kirk took me to get lunch,” she says; over by the door Jim rolls his eyes, and you laugh. “And then he took me all over everywhere!” Joanna continues, oblivious. “He showed me the library, and the holograms, and the observatory, and everything!”
“Sounds like you had fun,” you say as you shake her off so you can go sit down. “Where'd you go to eat?”
“Cafeteria,” she says, hopping up next to you. “It's a lot like at my school, only for grownups.”
“You eat, too?” you ask Jim as he takes a seat on her other side.
He gives you a look. “Of course I ate,” he says, like it's the stupidest question he's ever heard. You roll your eyes.
“The library is huge!” Joanna interrupts. “I bet there's five million books in there! Maybe even six million!”
“Probably,” you agree, though you're not sure there's quite that many. “But most of them are probably a little big for you.”
“There was one on the table, but it was about advanced physics,” she says, nodding seriously. “Way more advanced than the physics we're learning about.”
You laugh and shake your head. “I'm sure there are some books that are just right for you,” you tell her. “Maybe in a little bit Mr Kirk can help you find some, alright?”
Jim hits you, but when you smirk at him, he grins back.
“I wanna play a game,” Joanna announces, apparently tired of discussing the tour. “Can we play a game?”
“Uh,” you say, and look around. You don't think you have any games in the apartment – Jim probably has a couple of hologames, but you're pretty sure they're not anything you want her playing.
“I've got a pack of cards,” he says before you have to come up with an answer. “Let me go get them, okay, Jojo?”
You turn your head to glare at him so fast you hurt your neck, and it's still just barely in time to see him stick his tongue out at you before he disappears into his room, laughing. “That's what I call you,” you complain to Jo halfheartedly, but she's beaming from ear to ear about it and you don't have the heart to be really annoyed.
“Here we go,” Jim shouts from the other room, and emerges with a pack of playing cards in one hand. “What do you want to play?”
