Zine Review - "Tattoos in Harlem" by Ray Martinez
Even though me and Ray Martinez are from the same city, I don't think we've actually met each other in person. I think I saw him at the skatepark once, but I'm not sure.
Ray is one of the lucky handful that makes it out of Kansas and is now living in NYC. That's a pretty tough thing to do, especially for an artist. I've always been a fan of his artwork, which really stood out to me amongst the countless scribbles I see everywhere I go (mine included). I wish I would have bought one of his old shirts that he made with the skater attacking a cop on it. I think some of his old graff is still on a bridge near our old campout spot.
This zine is a collection of photos of tattoos that he had drawn and etched on to the skin of hoodrats in Harlem. Some notable ones are the "RIP Posers" tat on the cover, the Stewie Griffin as seen above, and the shank tattoo near the end. Throw in some other rachet street photos, and you got a classic B&W xerox zine.
