There Are Worse Things I Could Do

Today was the day she was going to do it. The sixteen-year-old couldn’t stomach it anymore. She couldn’t take knowing that most nights when she locked herself away in her room and she told her parents she was studying, or catching up on sleep that she really wasn’t. That she had a visitor, a very very unwelcome one at that. Ana Sofia took a deep breath before walking into the kitchen to approach her mother. It was the perfect time. Her dad had picked her up from school like always, but had to head back to the office before dinner. The girls were alone in the huge house, and Ana Sofia couldn’t stand lying anymore. Dumping her backpack down on the floor by the island in the middle of the kitchen, she sat on one of the stools and swiveled around in place for a moment before speaking. “Mom. I...need to talk to you,” the girl said trying to make it sound serious, but not that big of a deal all at the same time.

“What’s up?” the older woman asked, not taking her eyes off of the dishes in front of her that she was trying to carefully place back in the cabinet without making too much noise. “I’m, well, you know how I’m not...Dad said I can’t see Caspar anymore?” she asked, figuring there was no way she could say what she needed to without her mother being tipped off immediately. At that, Beatriz turned around to look at her daughter. Her brow furrowed in confusion, and her eyes beginning to narrow with accusation, she crossed her arms. “Yes?” It was almost as if she was egging her on, daring her to tell her that she had defied the rules.

“I am,” Ana Sofia said slowly, but surely. The two woman didn’t break eye contact for a few moments, and didn’t do so much as breath a few times before Beatriz spoke again. She licked her lips, and looked down at her feet, something Ana Sofia knew came before every long lectured, usually bilingual half-lecture, half-punishment she was ever going to get. “It wasn’t just your father who said you can’t see him anymore. I agreed with him completely,” she reassured her daughter. “Okay...” Ana Sofia began, almost thinking she wouldn’t make it to this point in the conversation. “Well, either way, we are...we’re-...I don’t really know what we are but I’m seeing him.” 

It was a second, maybe two before Beatriz replied, this time in a much louder tone. “He is nineteen years old, something you didn’t even tell me when you first went on a date with him. Do you wanna know why? Because even you know it’s wrong, Ana Sofia. Ay Dios mio.” She wasn’t sure if it was a downfall of being an only child, or a downfall of being a smart kid but either way it wasn’t working in Ana Sofia’s favor. She did know it was wrong and she didn’t need her parents to tell her that. “I know that the age difference is...something, but I promise we’re just hanging out. He’s a really good guy, and I like him,” Ana Sofia hating how every word that came out of her mouth made her seem like a cliche, melodramatic child. It was the truth though. “Can you just give him a chance? For me?” 

Beatriz leaned her hands on the counter, now much closer to her daughter than when she first spoke. “Are you coming to me to avoid going to Dad?” Ana Sofia felt like a deer caught in headlights. It was obvious that, that was indeed what she was doing. “He wouldn’t listen to any of it, you know that,” she said. Beatriz sighed, and looked down at her feet once more. “I don’t...I don’t like this at all,” she tried to remain firm but admittedly she remembered being young, and on the brink of her first real relationship. She didn’t want to shelter her daughter from everything, that was only Fletcher. Ana Sofia’s smile could typically light up a room, but it seemed so much more significant now because she knew she was about to have her mother on her side.

“I want to meet him, and not through a car window for two minutes. I want to know him before you’re going off doing whatever with him,” she stated, almost having the urge to wave a finger in the young girl’s face but knew better because it’s exactly what her mother would’ve done to her, and still did on occasion. “Okay.” Ana Sofia agreed, nodding her head furiously. Beatriz raised her eyebrows, as if asking if there was anything else. Ana Sofia jumped up and ran to hug her mother out of excitement. “Ay, know what you’re getting yourself into, linda,” Bee said, patting down her daughter’s hair in a way she knew annoyed her. “Don’t do anything stupid.”

What Is And What Should Never Be

“You wanna what?” Kent asked, more shocked than ever at the boy who usually dragged him into all sorts of terrible situations. “It’s really not that bad, they don’t have an alarm system. I checked. We’ve done worse,” Caspar said, kicking a rock down the sidewalk. Kent had known his best friend since they were toddlers, and never doubted what the older boy said. There was a certain level of trust that came with relying on each other the way that they did. In houses full of other siblings, they often felt so alone that they looked to each other for a real sense of family. “Okay.” Kent agreed, clear reluctance in his voice. Caspar shot him a satisfied smile before he started laying down the plan for their small time robbery. 

Despite being at the top of his class, the fifteen year old could get into some pretty decent trouble, mostly thanks to his older counterpart. It was clear that Caspar had a reason to shoplift, or try and make a quick buck. Kent was just along for the ride, or maybe some sort of half-assed cry for attention. Either way, the nerdy kid who sat at the front of every advanced math class he was in was definitely not the same kid who hopped fences, and ran from cops at night. It was exhilarating in his own little brain. 

Once the sun set, the two boys planted out behind a convenience store in their dingy neighborhood. Kent watched from atop a dumpster as the man closed up shop. He glanced over at Caspar who seemed antsy, but like he was excited to begin their adventure. Kent wasn’t so sure. This was the most elaborate plan they had set up, and he wouldn’t lie and say he wasn't nervous. The brunette could hear his parents tell him how disappointed they were in him, and that they always knew Caspar was a bad influence on him when in reality it might just be the opposite. Kent watched the old man carefully. He was balding, and before locking the gate took a final moment to zip up his windbreaker. His body showed signs of aging, and gave off an overall sense of tiredness. There was no way for him to no, but Kent got the feeling that he was just getting by. Like the last thing he needed was for two teenage boys to break a window and steal from him. He wouldn’t back out now though.

The darkness surrounded them as they waited after the man left. Kent wanted to talk, to fill the air with something. Anything to take away from the terrible feeling he felt in the pit of his stomach. Eventually the feeling spread, and his legs felt like jello, and his hands shook. He tried to play cool, but really he wanted to bash his head into the bricks. “You alright?” Caspar asked. Kent couldn’t quite explain the look on his face. It was a mix between being just as scared as he was, and everything someone who knew exactly how to lead the way would look like. It was a little scary. “Yeah, sure.” Kent said making no effort to hide his discomfort. “Alright, let’s go,” the older boy said.

Kent followed as he calmly approached the front of the store. Caspar studied it for a few seconds, before taking a look to both of his sides. No one was around as far as they could tell, and it didn’t take long before Caspar had smashed through the glass in the lower section of the door. He climbed inside quickly. “Hurry up!” he said to Kent, startling him from the trance he was in watching Caspar. He ducked down to climb in too, careful to avoid the glass. Caspar headed for the cash register, and at this point Kent knew what to do. He was something between a lookout and the guy who grabbed as much as he could that wasn’t the money. Kent was counting, and after forty-five seconds of being inside, the pair could hear sirens from outside. “Shit.” they said in unison. “Is it...us? I thought you said there was no alarm?” Caspar didn’t have to answer as the sirens seemed to grow closer in a record amount of time. If he was being honest, Kent would probably be just about ready to throw up and piss his pants all at the same time. Caspar shoved a wad of cash into his pocket and yelled for Kent to follow him back out.

Kent did as he was told, and followed him out into the night air again, cold sweat breaking out all over him. Caspar jumped for the barbed-wire fence, moving it at the top to make sure they could get through. “Come on,” he said in a panic, putting his hands out to help Kent over the fence. Kent jumped up, grabbing onto a part of the fence that wouldn’t cut his hands. He watched as he grazed some of the sharp edges with his arms, and the bleeding started. Landing on the ground on the other side, Kent felt a stinging pain shoot up through his feet all the way to his arms. He made a face of disgust, and watched for Caspar. The older boy was about halfway up the fence before he slid back down, losing his grip. “Kent, run.” he told him in a stern voice that reminded him of his father. 

“Come on then. Let’s go!” Kent replied, now ducking behind a dumpster as the blue and red lights filled the alley way. Caspar continued to try and climb the fence, but it was taking too long for him. “Go.” he repeated. Kent shook his head in confusion. “Not without you,” he said as if it was the most obvious thing in the world. “I swear to God, Ridley if you don’t get out of here I’m going to arrest you myself.” Caspar spoke in a tone that made Kent 100% sure he wasn’t messing around with him. The look in Caspar’s eyes only screamed for Kent to be gone, in the most sacrificial way Kent’d ever seen. If it wasn’t for the circumstances, he’d be happy that he could tell his best friend cared that much. “Go!” Caspar gave one last order, before Kent took off sprinting in the other direction. He couldn’t hear much over the pounding of his own feet on the pavement. He genuinely didn’t know if Caspar ever made it over the fence that night or not. He only knew that he’d never run so fast in his life.
