Being given the gift of an entire Oak tree by a very kind neighbour has prompted me to finally expand my kit with a brand new toy (I mean tool!). Splitting these 30cm / 12 inch diameter Oak logs with my small forest axe would be almost impossible and would tear up the wood fibres, so I’ve invested in this beast... an XL Froe by Ray Iles. It’s the first new addition to my equipment in almost three years and, although it’s not as portable as my other tools, it will give me the chance to carve some larger sculptural pieces, which is something I’ve been wanting to try for a long time.
