Fear Factory
Tuesday, June 23: Fear Factory, “Contagion”
“Contagion” fit comfortably within Transgression’s attempts at making Fear Factory more of a straightforward metal band. And to that end, the track’s riffing was dirtier, the playing was looser and Toby Wright’s production was raw, with only Burton C. Bell’s trademark vocals linking this to the band’s discography. And that was both the blessing and curse of Transgression: Fear Factory tried to expand their sound beyond industrial metal, and delivered a handful of exciting tracks in the process, but the record also sounded slapdash in spots (largely a function of being recorded and released so quickly after Archetype proved the band could exist without Dino Cazares) and in some ways ignored the group’s best qualities. Still, “Contagion” was a worthy headbanger- Christian Olde Wolbers wrote a catchy riff, Raymond Herrera’s less mechanistic bashing was a welcome change of pace, and Bell was still an exciting vocal presence. So the song came together nicely, even if most of Transgression didn’t.
