Merino will be Arteta's replacement, says Arsenal legend Ray Parlour
Arsenal star Ray Parlour has praised the club's decision to sign Mikel Merino from Real Sociedad. The Gunners are thought to be on the verge of signing the Spanish international. After spending £42 million on defender Riccardo Calafiori, manager Mikel Arteta has shifted his focus to strengthening the midfield. With only a year remaining on his Sociedad deal, Merino is a cost-effective option for Arteta. Parlour, speaking to talkSPORT, identified Thomas Partey as the player to be replaced by Merino. He stated: “You look at Thomas Partey. He might be on his way so they do need a little bit of strengthening in that midfield and give Declan Rice that little bit more license to go forward. “I like the box to box players like Bryan Robson back in the day. It’s just using common sense as a midfielder, if someone runs past you you just fill in for them. “Merino is a good age, at 28 he’s perfect he should be in his prime. At £25million that’s a decent deal. They’ve got a decent relationship with Real Sociedad with Tierney going there.” Read the full article
Timo Werner has reportedly verbally agreed to join Chelsea (Picture: Getty)Ray Parlour believes the race to sign Timo Werner is far from over as Manchester United could still hijack Chelsea’s move for the Leipzig star. Liverpool were in pole position to land Werner after Jurgen Klopp held a virtual meeting with his compatriot over a £49million switch to Merseyside, but Chelsea have jumped to the front of the queue after agreeing a deal in principle with the 24-year-old striker. The German looks set to follow Hakim Ziyech to Stamford Bridge in the summer transfer window after the Blues offered to make him one of the highest paid players in their history on wages of £200,000-a-week. The Germany international has been offered £200,000-a-week wages by Chelsea (Picture: Getty)However, Arsenal legend Parlour has told Frank Lampard and Chelsea not to rest on their laurels as he predicts United may still make a late bid to sign the forward. ‘I’m amazed that Man United are not in for Werner,’ the former Arsenal and England midfielder said on talkSPORT. ‘They’ve got money and probably do need another striker; [Marcus] Rashford can play wide if you need him to, off the flank. ‘I’m sure Manchester United might make a last-minute pop for Werner as well. Parlour predicts United could make a late move for the German attacker (Picture: Getty)‘I think the agent is trying to work the market now; that is how they work, putting it out there that the deal is nearly done and alerting other clubs so they have to pull their finger out. ‘”If we really want this player then we’ve got to up the money and up the wages”, and suddenly it could be a different factor for Chelsea.’ Abraham ‘liked’ an Instagram post announcing Chelsea’s deal for Werner this week (Picture: Getty)Earlier this week, Tammy Abraham appeared to welcome Werner to Stamford Bridge by ‘liking’ a post on Instagram, but Steve Nicol believes the youngster should be worried for his place. ‘I don’t believe Frank and Chelsea are going to change the way they play,’ the ex-Liverpool defender said on ESPN. ‘And you have to say that signing Werner would spell the end for Tammy Abraham. I mean goodness knows what is going through his head. ‘Allegedly Frank has been telling Werner that he is going to build the team around him so you don’t build your team around a wide midfielder. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has scored 17 goals for Arsenal in the Premier League this season (Getty Images)Ray Parlour has included Arsenal striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in his Premier League Team of the Season. Aubameyang currently has 17 goals in the Premier League this season, two behind Jamie Vardy who leads the way for the Golden Boot. Parlour has included both in his Premier League season XI along with Sadio Mane, although there is no room for his Liverpool teammate Mohamed Salah. Starting with his goalkeeper, Parlour told VBET: ‘It’s got to be [Dean] Henderson from Sheffield United, I think he’s really done well this season. ‘When he’s had a couple of bad mistakes he’s really bounced back and played brilliantly. ‘I’m sure one day he will be number one for Manchester United. Dean Henderson will become Manchester United’s No.1, says Ray Parlour (Getty Images)Naming his back four, Parlour said: ‘[Trent Alexander-Arnold’s] like a winger, gets down the right-hand side, scores goals. He’s always a danger going forward. ‘Got to be [Virgil] Van Dijk. He’s been a real leader at the back. A Rolls Royce of a player for Liverpool. ‘Alongside him, now this was a tricky one. I looked at [Jack] O’Connell from Sheffield United, Conor Coady has been excellent for Wolves, but I’m going to go for [Caglar] Soyuncu. ‘I think he has been a brilliant signing for Leicester. I am sure lots of bigger clubs are looking at him now, he’s got a big, big future in front of him.’ Virgil van Dijk and Andrew Robertson are included in Ray Parlour’s Team of the Season (Visionhaus)Parlour then named Jordan Henderson, Jack Grealish and Kevin De Bruyne as his midfield trio. ‘Jordan Henderson, he’s definitely in my team,’ said the former Arsenal midfielder. ‘I think he’s really been a leader for Liverpool and England. Alongside him, [Kevin] De Bruyne. Jack Grealish has been Aston Villa’s talisman this season (Visionhaus)‘The assists he makes, always one step ahead of everybody in that midfield. ‘The other side of him, it’s got to be Jack Grealish. I think Jack has really been outstanding again for Aston Villa. ‘If it wasn’t for Jack I think they would certainly be relegated and maybe relegated already.’ Ray Parlour’s Premier League Team of the Season (Metro.co.uk)Naming his attacking trio, Parlour said: ‘On the left I am going to go Mane, another Liverpool player, he’s been brilliant this year.’ Up top Jamie Vardy, 33 years old, amazing. Really looking after himself but when he gets on that pitch his pace is still there. ‘And I’ve got to try and get one Arsenal player in this, Aubameyang. ‘He’s the one who has kept Arsenal going, he’s the one who has been scoring goals for fun.’ Follow Metro Sport across our social channels, on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
