I implore all non-POCs to do your own research
The recent removal of the statue of Frank Rizzo in Philadelphia caused quite the stir in my house. Apparently, my grandparents, whom I loved and admired very much of course, really loved the guy as mayor in their time, and my mom admires him currently as a result. She said that he was “tough, but fair” and “only punished people that did wrong”. But if that was true, why has his statue been such a problem over the last few years?
Then I looked him up myself.
And I found a whole different person.
This guy was for segregation. He urged people to “vote white” in elections. There was a spike in police brutality when he was both police commissioner and mayor of Philly. In short, a total asshole.
Again, I’m not saying that my family are racists. They weren’t and aren’t. But they believe EVERYTHING that the government told/tells them. They never did/do any outside research, and when the media portrays protesters and advocates as violent and aggressive, that’s what they believed. They were/are COMPLETELY blinded by their patriotism, naively believing that the government only wanted what was best for the American people. Just always remember:
Anything you see on TV has been filtered and edited a million times over.
And more over your family members of 45+ probably have some really outdated and archaic world views that they have been brainwashed into believing.
I PLEAD with you all to look into history on your own. Look at independent sources. And please for the love of all that’s good and holy, don’t just automatically buy into your “Boomer” family’s mentality. They were taught something that is now outdated and obsolete. It doesn’t excuse it of course, but they are so set in their ways it’s gonna be hard to shake them.
But you are the future. You are the next generation. Shake off the flawed teachings of the past and get your own education. Things will become MUCH more clear.
