Alex Reviews a Headphones: Razer Kraken Chroma and Mobile

If you backed me into some weird metaphorical corner and said “Hey Alex, you gotta pick just one of your 6 different pairs of headphones to keep and then get rid of the rest!,” well, first I would wonder where you had obtained a metaphorical corner and ask from where I could get one, and second, after a moment’s pause, I would give you the answer.

I’d pick my Razer Krakens.

I actually have two pairs: The USB-connecting Kraken Chroma 7.1s, and the neon green version of the Kraken Mobile, which has an iPhone-compatible plug/cord. Both are based off of the same core Kraken model, which has been around for years now and is the main audio line Razer produces.

The headphones feature plush earpads, which are super comfy around my largish ears in spite of their circular design. The earpads fold up for easy storage. The headband is this brilliant two piece, squishy affair with cloth on the bottom and leather on the top. The top and bottom are two individual pieces and the padding is in-between them, which really allows it to mold to your head.

40 mm drivers are employed, and they are tuned for a fun, BIG sound. If you don’t like an intense, powerful, theater-like sound signature...these won’t be your favorite. But where’s the fun in that? :) All frequency ranges are well-represented, and pushed without sounding distorted. When Razer says they are tuned to sound amazing, they are right...and unless you’re looking for a very particular sound signature, you’ll probably agree.

The Kraken Mobiles are new and have a detachable cable, with in-line controls for iOS, and they come in a bunch of fun colors. The Chromas feature their own built-in DAC so you can bypass your on-board sound card, and they also have 16 million color RGB lighting on the sides of the earcups, as is the custom nowadays. The Chromas also feature a really impressive digital microphone, probably the best-sounding boom mic I’ve ever used on a headset. It’s a little tricky to learn the right distance to work the mic from, but it’s got built-in noise cancelling and a much wider frequency response range than basically every other headset or bluetooth mic. You’ll sound like you’re talking through a proper microphone, instead of an old telephone.

Let me take a moment to talk about Razer Synapse, and Razer Surround. Synapse is their cloud-enabled profile software, and when paired with Razer headphones, it allows for a wide range of options for adjusting things like EQ, bass boost, and the noise cancellation of the Chromas. Included in this software is Razer Surround, which is available in a free version as well as a 20 dollar pro version with more options. Razer surround will work with ANY pair of stereo headphones, not just those from Razer. (The Chromas have the functionality of the pro version built right into the hardware.)

No joke, Razer Surround is AMAZING. It is, far and away, the best virtual surround I’ve ever heard, and I’ve used everything from the earliest Creative/Aureal A3D stuff all the way up to Dolby Headphone and DTS Headphone X. Razer Surround is better. It shows up as a proper 7.1 device in Windows, and can play back proper 7.1 tracks. It also does a great job upmixing stereo tracks. Plus, with the Pro version you can calibrate the virtual speakers to your liking, moving their position in the sound field to dial in something that sounds great to you. 

It’s free of the weird echoing and distortion that comes with other virtual surround systems, with a sound that’s clean and powerful. I don’t use headphones with my Windows machine without Razer surround turned on, period. I’m never going back.

Back to the Krakens! They are a well-built, fun-sounding, comfy headphone, available in a lot of different configurations to suit your needs. They are reasonably priced. Word of warning! Avoid the cheaper Kraken USB model that retails for around 60 bucks. It’s still okay, but it’s not nearly as comfy and some important features are stripped out. It only has 30mm drivers, and the earcups are thinner and don’t swivel nearly as much. Every other Kraken model is aces though.

The only thing I could mark as a knock against these is that there’s no Bluetooth model, but that’s probably not a fair thing to hold against them. If you don’t want to go down the stupid headphone rabbit hole, and you want a fun, portable pair of headphones, start and end your search with the Kraken line.
