i was reading but tumblr refreshed the page so! more raziel!crowley headcanons. [ link to the masterpost ]
this one i like to call,
Cherub’s Tea Time
how can crowley know that god is not replying? obviously he can't, it's not like he's an angel.
HOWEVER, raziel is a cherub and we have no cherub who fell (since lucifer can be not counted as one. especially if we don't count gabriel, or raphael, famous cherubs, as part of them. friendly reminder that archangels are usually not only archangels, like michael, who is also a seraph, or sandalphon, who was a human)
so maybe, cherubs just don't see it that way. like, yes their colleague fell, but who cares? they still deserve to hear god's voice, which is literally the only thing they do and they are not a lot, in fact they are usually only four (they might be more, but why should they).
and yes technically the number three isn’t the worst idea and we are talking about abrahamic religions so three is actually an amazing idea, but still, you really don’t need to explain to me how angeology works.
also, cherubs are the guardians of eden, so hey. he would already know his way around.
so of course they know that raziel/crowley fell because now they just aren’t complete anymore, and so of course they miss him and so maybe they still talk to him sometimes. like yeah, archangels can do what they want and rule, but technically cherubs are above them in the hierarchy so.
even if we count the whole Neil’s New Hierarchy as the only one, seraphs are still those who are directly in contact with god, thing that can’t be said about the archangels we see in good omens.
and so yeah, headcanon that crowley still talks to his siblings/colleagues from time to time. cherub tea time.
reasons why i headcanon crowley as raziel (big headcanon masterpost):
The Book of Raziel (ספר רזיאל המלאך), in latin “liber razielis archangeli”, is a grimoire that’s been given from Raziel to Adam when the latter was thrown out of Eden. It contains angeolology, magick, the Names of God and the “Book of Secrets”.
Do you really think an angel like this wouldn’t ask so many questions that the Almighty had to make him Fall to have some peace?
In the Book of Raziel, God sends the “most important angel” (pride much?) to teach Adam the laws of living on the Earth, knowledge of the cosmos included.
Raziel teaches Adam how to speak the Human Tongue (the Babel bit comes from here), and I find it very fitting with the fact that Crowley uses the phrase “that went down like a lead balloon” when those words really didn’t mean anything yet.
There’s a part about the importance of the name, in the Book, which I connect with the whole Raziel/Crawly/Crowley, since he’s the only character we see going around and changing his name.
I honestly just want to add this and it’s probably not connected but, at some point the Book arrives to Abraham, and 80% Abraham wasn’t his real name, but a word coming from אָב (’aḇ, which means father) and ra'âmu ("to love") or rwm ("being above") and, once again, changing names to go down in history.
When Raziel gave Adam the book, some “envious angels” (demons) took it and threw it in the sea. Rahab (probably Raphael) was the one who got the Almighty’s order to fish it and give it to Abraham, which isn’t really important for the headcanon but it’s funny that the two angels we think might have been Crowley are so close together.
In this headcanon, Raphael might be simply a name Crowley uses when he has to do Good Deeds (for the Arrangement or for his own, we know how kind Crowley actually is), and the name “It is God who heals” is just a word pun because? God heals? Crowley knows the humans were created to help themselves;
or may be another angel, I am thinking maybe Raziel’s twin, the person who created the stars with them (“I helped build that one”, not “I built that one”), who may help Crowley with doing Good by letting him drop his name or doing things he can’t do anymore because he’s a demon, or maybe he’s around in the stars somewhere and just told his brother “have fun” and gave him his name to protect (maybe the talked when the demons took Crowley’s Book from Adam? Or when Crowley was following his Book and found it with Abraham?)
Raziel is a cherub, which means that he’s spent his life in Heaven maybe building some stars first and then 24/7 in the presence of the Almighty. I think an angel like this wouldn’t even think to ask the Metatron to speak for God, because they have been near Her. They’ve never needed some other angel to create the connection. So the whole “Okay, I know you're testing them, you said you were going to be testing them. You shouldn't test them to destruction. Not to the end of the world,” makes more sense. If he were to be one of the angels that have to stay with Her all the time, then he totally would speak to Her like She were right there in front of him.
I have this specific Good Omens headcanon that is a Crowley-as-Raphael one as well as a Crowley-Was-NotRaphael one and hhh I can’t stop thinking about it.
Raziel!Crowley would have hated Babel. Between Raziel’s character and the fact that they were the one who taught humans how to speak, they would be crossed that the Almighty would even think about creating different languages.
I am still working on the fic that has Crowley as the former Archangel Raziel, but this is one of the things I know I need to add. Because? Crowley would teach the Human Language to the kids and, suddenly, there are More Languages. And he needs to teach them all because the Book of Raziel surely has them. So he has to learn a lot of new languages and for what? Because the Almighty doesn’t like the fact that they are building a big ass tower? Eh.
That was probably the moment when he thought about the Rosetta Stone for the first time. A Stone that can translate languages and is so miraculously found right when people were looking for it? Looks like kids being randomly saved from the Flood because “that’s what goes against Her Plan” if you ask me.
Demon bullshit.
Still, I don’t think he would teach English or Languages in a Teachers!AU. Crowley’s thing is still the cosmos (never forget that Raziel taught the humans how to take care and Love that too), so I still think he would teach Astronomy.
When he was told to “go up and make some trouble”, Crawly wasn’t completely sure why they told him to, partially because he wasn’t completely sure of what “trouble” meant, and secondarily, nobody told him how to actually make some trouble.
Just don’t what an Angel would, a voice that sounded dangerously like Samael’s - or was it Lucifer now? - said, and that was something he could work with. Since he Fell merely for asking questions, he would make Man and Woman know firstly Imagination and then Doubt, things that would surely make them Question.
Much like his angelic counterpart, Crawly went about with a book in his hands, the one he wrote while sitting beside his Mother’s door and listening to her teachings about Humanity, Universe, Life and the Importance of Names. As the humans didn’t know what written (or spoken, actually) word meant, he didn’t encounter any trouble with his way of handling the book: the humans didn’t want to steal it and the Angels didn’t want to get near him enough to actually read what was written on its cover.
As the minutes - minutes? Has someone invented Time yet? Do the Humans know how to count seconds and minutes and hours? - passed, Crawly found in the book he wrote himself a question for his book-keeping problem, hiding it safely and neatly in something people could call a “pocket dimension”, the only proof it still existed being the snake tattooed on the demon’s temple.
He shifted in his snake form, truly more comfortable when his body and wings were still recovering from the Fall, and started to slither around in the Garden, trying to understand how to work out his sinful and tempting plan, while watching Man and Woman spending their first days as living beings getting to know and try everything in the Garden.
He decided to take what the Humans would probably call a nap, figuring that indulge in Sloth would at least give him some breathing room for the whole figuring-out-part.
He woke up after what might have been three days, more or less, with an Idea in his mind and Woman right in front of him. He hissed, but she didn’t move, so he made an act of slithering around just to scare her. When Woman didn’t do anything but slightly flinch, Crawly decided that she were to be the first one to be Tempted.
«Isháh,» he said, but Woman didn’t answer. As far he knew, the Humans didn’t have a language yet, and if they did have one, well that one surely wasn’t going to be good old Enochian. He hissed at Woman again, the hid in a bush, shifting to his corporation and starting to read his book once again. Only when he arrived to the Humanity part he allowed himself to slow down, and carefully read every page.
He slowly tried to pronounce the words that were written, this new language completely alien for him but also somehow familiar, as if it were some sort of second language that one speaks only at the table with their grandparents during the Christmas holidays.
Uh, he ought to ask someone what “grandparents” and “Christmas” meant.
When he felt almost sure, he shifted to his snake form and tried again, saying: «Woman.» When the said Human shifted her head and watched him, he almost smiled at himself for the good job.
«I don’t understand why you and Man should not know the difference between Good and Bad. How can you be able to ssssee if what you are doing is Right?»
The words for Good and Bad were strange on his tongue, and that s has sounded dangerously like an hiss, but as his first Human Interaction it surely wasn’t a bad one.
