It's Britney, Bitch.

Ben can't figure out what Jimmy's deal with Britney is.....but then it might be more than he realizes. Will it be enough to break them apart forever?

HAHAHA the pun. For nikolagriffins prompt of Hit Me Baby One More Time. I still can't decide if it's funny or....

Ben didn’t know how he was supposed to take another night of it. Jimmy was a lot of things. Cold and calculating and loyal as any soldier he’d ever met but something just did not add up. There was a piece of the puzzle that, no matter how he twisted it, would not fit. And Ben may have been super human but even alien hybrids need their catnaps. The way things were going he was lucky to get in a half an hour before the rumbling slur dragged him back out of his already restless stupor.

“It’s Britney, bitch.”

“You’ve got to be kidding me,” Ben groaned, his hands coming up to cup his ears in a futile attempt to block out his tent-mates awful rendition of Gimme More. The rest of the night consisted of a non-stop performance of Britney Spears’s album Blackout.

“Dude, you look like shit.”

That was the last thing he wanted to hear out of Hal’s mouth come 6am wake up call. He felt like he’d been clocked over the head with a cinderblock and his mouth had been stuffed to the brim with cotton. He was thirsty and hungry and despite the fact that he hadn’t a lick of alcohol the previous night he felt like he’d downed three bottles on his own.  His eyes were itchy and red and he could feel the swell of bags beneath them.

“Trust me,” he answered, voice hoarse and sore, “I kn— do you hear that?” His body tensed immediately as the all too familiar tune floated softly from where Lourdes, Maggie, and Jimmy, of course, were clustered. His body tensed defensively, frantic to get as far away from the noise as possible.

“Uh? You okay, Ben?” Hal’s thick brows perked questioningly high upon his face.

“Do you hear that?” he repeated desperately.

“Yeah, actually. Sounds kind of like,” he paused and his eyes rolled up thoughtfully, trying hard to place the tune, “that one Britney Spears song.”

“Hit Me, Baby, One More Time.”

“Why do you know that?”

“Jimmy has been singing her songs, and I mean all of them, none stop for the past two weeks in his sleep.”

Hal’s eyes drifted subtly over to the breakfast line, his expression a mix of confusion, disgust, and pity for his younger brother, “Dude, no wonder you look like crap.”

The day went on and it wasn’t until Jimmy and Ben were out on their own scouting the Badlands that Jimmy noticed anything was wrong. He probably wouldn’t have noticed at all if it wasn’t for Ben nearly tumbling off the rooftop they’d perched themselves on out of exhaustion.

“Why do you look like you haven’t slept in a month?”

If Ben’s glare wasn’t enough to answer the question the practical growl he released should’ve been. Or maybe the cracking of his knuckles as his hands tightened into fists so tight his nails drew blood from the palms of his hands. Or the way the air went cold around them as if the daggers in his back had sucked out all of the heat.

“Seriously, Ben, what is it?” Jimmy’s eyes were soft with concern, a stark contrast to the storm brewing in Ben’s.

“What is it with you and Britney?” he finally burst out.

“There’s no one named Britney in camp?” Jimmy’s head cocked to the side, worried for the guy that he’d begun to begrudgingly give a damn about.

“No, I mean Spears. Britney Spears,” even to his own ears it sounded stupid, “like the singer.”

“Uh,” Jimmy stopped to think. “My sister was a big Britney—oh.”

Ben’s glare immediately relaxed. He curled an arm around the younger boy’s much too bony shoulders and pulled him closer into the crook of his neck. He barely heard as Jimmy mumbled, the wetness of unacknowledged tears tickling Ben’s skin.

“Her birthday is next week.”

They sat in silence for what felt like an hour before Ben couldn’t take it anymore.

“Man, we’re duct taping your mouth shut tonight, I can’t do another night of listening to you sing Britney in your sleep.”

Jimmy drew his head slowly away from Ben and looked up at him from under clumped eyelashes, a smile coming unbidden across chapped lips.

The dark hair of the boy like branches of hawthorn reaching aimlessly into moonlit sky, matted and dirty from months without wash. Dirt hung in clumps, shaking off with every step he took, and milky white skin, almost luminescent in the night, was smudged with the soil used to cover his grave. Eyes were fish in a tank, bright and darting, afraid, and completely unsure. He stole out from behind the mother he’d come to know, terrified that things had changed. Almost unnoticed in the heat of the moment, attention brought only by another who’d seen his face every night in his dreams, he shrunk away from prying stares, searching desperately.

 “Jimmy?”

“Ben.”

And his search had not been in vain for he had come home to the one that had given him something to believe in.

I'm in a writing mood and seeing as I now have a laptop I can actually write....hit me with a prompt....

Razorback Mountain is my strongest but I can attempt Hades and Halgie and anything really.
