[New Song Of The Week] Alex Vargas - Giving Up The Ghost
Last Saturday in Hamburg we were lucky enough to hear someone we wanted to hear for quite some time and who goes by the name of Alex Vargas. After falling in love with his unique voice through a Mahogany session last year, we’ve anticipated the moment to see him live even more when we heard him reach for those high notes in Solid Ground. Thus, Alex Vargas was circled and ‘hearted’ on our timetable for Reeperbahn festival 2015.
He played in a place called Indra, an intimate venue in one of the busiest bar streets of Hamburg’s nightlife, Große Freiheit. The space could hold approximately 250 people and there were no empty spots on the floor at the start of his performance, even though his show clashed with the one next door of fellow singer-songwriter Rhodes. This being the legendary club where The Beatles started their Hamburg adventure made it even more tempting to pay at least a visit to the Danish delight that was showcasing there. Yes, you might not hear it at once, but Alex was born in Holte, Denmark (but lives in London now).
And then the waiting began. Unfortunately he borrowed a Fender Stratocaster which, after playing the first notes on stage, turned out to be broken. So long for a good start. Or as the Germans in the audience would say: wohl begonnen ist halb gewonnen. But after a quick look backstage for a replacement strat the show could go on. It got better by the minute, with enough cheers in between the songs to call the gig a success in the end. A good start of Vargas’ Hamburg adventures after all. Let’s hope there are many more to come.
Enjoy!
HONNE at Mojo Club – Reeperbahnfestival 2015, Day 3
You guys, I have fallen in love with Honne (silent “e”). I have been listening to nothing but Honne for the past two weeks, and I went to two Honne gigs at Reeperbahnfestival, and this band has everything: bearded people, beardless people, black people, white people, women, men, people wearing glasses, people wearing no glasses, and it’s all so beautiful and soulful and slightly funky and I want to do nothing but go to Honne gigs every day forever.
Honne are coming to Vienna this week to play at the Warner Music Night at Waves Vienna on Friday, October 2 at Porgy & Bess.
