Attraction is an unusual thing, a siren that haunts and stalks in the shadows. It warps according to their will, helping them to subdue their prey. Edward Pembroke had a siren. It took Amabelle's form.
The waters are still around him. It is silent. And then he thinks of her. Soft sighs spill from the lips of Amabelle. A song. She is his siren. Nestling into forgotten corners of his brain, she emerges from them at night to prick like a scorpion at his being.
That's why they are here. The only reason he allows himself to be here. It's not his fault, he reasons. It's her, she brought him here, enticed him with the sweet curves of her lips as she mumbles low, her face fitting perfectly into the crook of his neck, breathing so soft, so sweet against him; her amber eyes that bleed into the flame he holds before him; the way his name tumbles out of her, teasing yet controlled. Reason eludes him as he stares at her, in awe, in reverence. The corners of her lip tighten and pull upward in a familiar grin.
She knows what she's doing. And so does he.
They sway, turning around each other even when standing still - orbiting, he realises. He’s realised a lot of things lately. Emotions forged in the cold fire of his clarity.
His fire?
No. Hers.
The one that burns in her eyes.
Amabelle is a siren. An image of contradictions meant to break him down. She sings her siren song low. It is sacred, it is only for his ears. She brings him to his knees. He sings too, words spilling out and catching on the air.

Oxford's medical ward
Lester woke up with a migraine, clutching the right side of his head he felt irritated by the sparse lights, especially those flickering. He tried to get up to get something that would fulfill his hunger partially, the already hard task worsened when his body's pain intensified right after he moved it. Taking a deep breath, he got his leg off the ground in one swift & fast motion. If there was a choice between living with a leg that brought nothing but pain or living without a leg, in the moment; he would choose the latter.
Stuck in an uncomfortable bed, he could only think about thoughts of what occurred before he was forced to fall into a dreamless sleep. He wished Noah was here to get the burden of what he witnessed off his chest.
After who knows how long, The Doctor stepped into the room along with two children. Apparently, it was pretty late, for the children fell asleep moments after lying down on the same bed despite their words that said so otherwise a few minutes ago. Looking at how the doctor lovingly let out a sigh of relief at last, one could almost think they were looking at a father tucking his children in after a long day of work.
Lester called out to The Doctor his voice straining because of the long rest. The doctor looked a bit surprised at first but he rapidly started to accept this new reality, courtesy of the apocalypse. He performed some routine checkups on Lester, Lester asked about the squad and The Doctor filled him in on what had happened over the course of the past few days to the best of his knowledge. Then on Lester's not-so-polite request, went out to fetch something for Lester to eat & drink.
Since, Donovan was out cold, along with most of her soldiers being either dead or out of the doctor's head & the remaining residents of the Oxford base needed The Doctor. He was able to grab a decent amount of food ration together with reluctant immortals for Lester. They did not think that a human could tell something worth giving up their limited rest time for.
Much to the dismay of Pileon, Lester prioritized solving his malnutrition issue over telling anyone about the horrors he witnessed. In short, Pileon hated Lester's guts.
Then Lester started using his mouth for something else than eating, talking that is. The immortals' heavy stare could have made others a bit hesitant to be the one telling them about Ada's death but Lester talked surprisingly well, he even added a bit of humor at the starting of his tale. When he finally told them about Ada, he could see Pileon becoming a statue, the soul doesn't stay in an idol, sometimes it leaves through tears or in the case of people like Pileon it leaves without leaving a trace of its departure.
When Lester finished telling everyone about his memories; Pileon grabbed Lester by the throat, and Lester became afraid of vomiting up all that he ate. Anhea felt intense hatred towards Donovan & thought that she should be dealt with before anything else, in particular, proving Lester's innocence in this whole fiasco to the demon with inadequate emotional stability.
Unfortunately, Anhea was the sole one on Earth that Pileon would listen to. Therefore, she despite being very irritated brought Pileon to his senses. Whilst Pileon was still recovering, Anhea already left for Donovan's room. Looking at Donovan's unconscious body, she knew that she would enjoy watching whatever Pileon was planning to do for serving Ada justice.
Pileon raced towards Donovan's corpse, the soldiers were apparently planning to bury her once they've healed out of respect for their dear leader. ‘Sure’ thought Pileon ‘Give her a peaceful burial with her body in one piece when she took apart Ada's wings and heart then tortured her body while she was alive enough to feel the pain.’ Incredulous that Donovan had even a drop of humanity, Pileon didn't even think about the possibility of Donovan killing Ada out of mercy.
{I will not attempt to describe the gruesome things done to Donovan by Pileon}
Pileon & Anhea furtively left the room. They returned to Lester, they had already realized that after the soldiers found out what happened to Donovan, they wouldn't leave those involved in doing it to her alone. There was only one place they could think of going to. Rotkov, the current residence of the elite squad. Lester simply couldn't survive anywhere else & the immortals had already stolen the serum that could help soothe Anhea's pain, while inflicting pain on Donovan, Pileon got the location of the serum out of her too. They looted some of the base's food supplies & left.
After Several Days
They spotted one member of the squad sitting on a bench not far from the town's outskirts. The immortals & Lester descended onto the ground of Rotkov after a long period of avoiding the abomination's attention along with taking care of the few that noticed the group.
Noah couldn't control himself upon seeing Lester in such a state. Bloody bandages around his head. Bruises on his face. He got up & in front of Lester embarrassingly quick. The immortals asked about the whereabouts of the elite squad's new residence before either of the humans could get a word in.
Noah led them to Romanov's hunting lodge. Once inside, the angel along with the demon left the company of humans. Noah took two disinfectant tablets, a small clean container & handkerchief. He went outside to collect snow, and Lester followed him on his gesture. Lester sat down on the stairs leading to the estate.
"I never would have thought that you would be up for being my caretaker." Lester smirked slightly.
"Don't let it get to your head. I just want the general to give you tasks, taking some of the burden off my shoulders." Noah tried to sound nonchalant, Lester snickered at him, and Noah rolled his eyes.
He dropped the tablets into the melted snow, closed the bottle to shake it until he was satisfied then sat down next to Lester. "Why don't we do this inside?" asked Lester. "I have to guard the front of the estate. Cain, Yan, the general are looking for the missing Anna & a tamed wolf with her owner, Lane along with another lady is resting & Abel is tied up."
"I heard that Hans also flew the plane"
"We got attacked by a hoard of abomination mid-flight, he unfortunately got killed." Lester could only nod in response.
Seeing Noah take a sanitizer out of his pocket, Lester remarked "Do you always carry this around with you? Clean-freak."
Noah raised an eyebrow "I won't clean my hands if that's what you want."
Lester looked to the side flustered "Come on, I was trying to lighten things up. I didn't really mean it."
Noah looked so done with Lester. After heating the sludge with the gas cylinder he found in the hunting lodge, taking his gloves off & sanitizing his hands, he dipped a handkerchief into the water carefully. He removed the redhead's bandages, next, he pressed a handkerchief against Lester's swollen head, Lester sighed feeling relieved. Noah rinsed the cloth, then pressed it against Lester's head again, he asked "Did Donovan do this to you?"
Lester's eyes dimmed, rays of the blood moon falling on them. "Yeah, hit me hard on the head. She's dead now, Pileon & Anhea found out what she did to Ada."
Noah rinsed the handkerchief, pressing it to Lester's head again."It was about time someone gave the professor a taste of her own medicine." He smiled contemptuously.
When the water cooled down, Noah along with Lester gathered everything back together. Whilst picking up the last item (handkerchief), the wind knocked it out of Lester's grip. It landed right on Noah's face, he immediately picked it up with two fingers. "Disgusting." He then turned towards Lester "I didn't know that your hands were damaged too."
Noah got up to head back into the hunting lodge with all the supplies he took from it, a snowball hit his back when he was almost at the entrance. He turned towards the sound of Lester's excited voice. "My hands work just fine, It's you who attracts inconvenient things towards you!"
"Is this your unique style of provoking people to join a snowball fight?" Noah went towards him.
"Depends on whether you will fight me or not."
"I would rather do my duty of guarding the gate than waste my time & be lousy."
"I don't consider time spent being happy as time wasted. Unless you're just trying to seem all high & mighty when in reality you're just a bad snowball fighter? Seems plausible to me."
"Even if you hit me in the face, I can defeat you without my glasses."
"Dancers & soldiers have better chances of winning a fight compared to chefs & mathematicians."
"I can shoot & cut precisely." Noah hit Lester right in the face with a snowball. "Point proven, I presume?"
"Beginner's luck. Why are you so afraid of entering into a real snowball fight? Are you too much of a snowball for that?" Lester laughed
"Haha, I might die of laughter."
"I am sorry, I forgot that your definition of a rib-tickler is jokes like these: 'What’s the best way to woo a math teacher? Use acute angle', am I funny to you now?"
"I will do a snowball fight with you, just stop pestering me with these jokes."
They built their small mountain of snow by their side. The rules were very simple, whoever gets hit with 10 snowballs loses. Noah took his glasses off, and then Lester announced the start of the game. Both threw their snowball at the same time, but only Lester managed to get hit. "One to zero," said Noah considering the possibility that Lester is playing like an amateur on purpose to catch Noah off guard at the end of the game. 'If that's the case then I mustn't let my ego get the better of me as the game progresses.' He thought.
Lester played the first loss off "Whatever but you know what they say, 'Don't count your eggs until-" He got hit again." they are hatched...' Two to zero. I won't give up until-"
Smack! Noah was hit, then he said "The very end? Two to one." Lester nodded while making sure that another one of Noah's snowballs missed their target.
The pair were smiling like fools. "Ah!" Lester's forehead was hit, he clutched his head with one palm, a snowball in the other.
"I am so sorry, are you okay?" Noah rushed towards him. Lester put the snowball on his opponent's face."How blind you are, Noah. Three to two." The look on Noah's face made him laugh.
The redhead was then shot by a snowball seven times.
Noah's heated cheeks were cooled by snow falling from the sky. Lester looked up, Noah followed his gaze in the middle of putting his glasses back.
"I didn't even notice when it started snowing," said Lester, Noah agreed.
"The moon looks more beautiful covered in red, Noah" Noah tilted his head back down at Lester. "It does."
