The Night Before

Characters: Alex, Thomas Hunt, Addison Sinclair Rating: PG Notes: Alex is staying at Addison’s house the night before her wedding. But, Thomas couldn’t stay away from his fiancee.

“You know what we’re doing is wrong,” Alex whispered, her head perfectly tucked into the crook of his neck as they cuddled in bed. 

“Says who?” Thomas’s fingers absentmindedly danced gently up and down her arm as he held her safely. 

“Pretty much everyone,” she acknowledged, burying her head a little closer into him. 

“Well, we aren’t everyone and we both agree the superstition is outdated,” he reminded her. 

“Addison is going to freak out if she wakes up and catches you here,” Alex murmured into his neck. 

“I can handle her,” Thomas reassured her. “As much as Addison feels she is in control, it is our day. This is our wedding.”

“You try telling her that!” Alex teased. She rolled over and held her hand in front of them. The diamonds in her engagement ring shimmered even in the darkness. “I can’t wait for tomorrow.”

“Nor can I,” Thomas interlaced his fingers with hers. “My almost-wife.”

“My almost-husband,” she turned into him again, her lips finding his, softly. “I love you.”

“As do I, my Alex,” he breathed, brushing her hair to the side.

“What time is it?” 

“I don’t know,” he acknowledged. “Do you want me to go?”

Alex shook her head no, as she wrapped her arms tighter around him. 

“Okay,” Thomas replied the corner of his lip turning up. He kissed the top of her head. “Are you tired?” 

“A little,” she admitted, stifling a yawn. 

“Then I should go. We have our whole lives ahead of us. We can survive one night. You need your sleep. Especially since I’m not sure we will be doing much of that tomorrow night,” he smirked kissing her again. 

“I like the sound of that.” She mumbled against his lips.

“Good night my beautiful bride,” Thomas whispered pulling away. He slipped out of bed and began to get ready to leave. 

“Stay,” Alex requested, her eyes wide with wanting. 

“What about Addison?” Thomas questioned. 

“Stay,” she repeated.

Thomas sighed. There was nothing he wouldn’t do for her. “How can I say no?”

“You can’t.” Alex offered her hand, ushering Thomas back to bed. 

He unbuttoned his shirt and removed his pants before climbing back into bed with her. 

Alex rested her head on his chest as he wrapped his arms around her once more. His thumb caressed circles on her back. Alex relished the warmth and comfort of his body against hers as she drifted off to sleep. 

*** Alex and Thomas woke to the bright sunlight shining through the open window and the sound of Addison knocking on the door. 

“Good morning, Mrs. Hunt,” Addison giggled. “Can I come in?”

“Just a minute,” Alex replied trying not to laugh as she helped Thomas gather his clothes.

He had just gotten his pants on when Alex opened the window and rested his shirt and shoes on the ledge outside. 

“You’re not serious,” Thomas narrowed his eyes at her. “I’m not climbing out a window like this is high school.”

“It’s that or face Addison,” Alex smiled, biting her lip. 

Hunt groaned and moved toward the window. “I won’t forget this.”

“As you shouldn’t,” Alex kissed him deeply before quickly pulling away. She shut the curtains, hiding him on the other side without giving him time to respond. 

“Come in,” Alex said cheerfully trying to think of an excuse for the delay. 

“Is everything alright?” Addison looked around curiously.

“Mmhmm.” She tried to hide her guilt as Addison walked around, surveying the room. 

“I’m sorry, I just can’t do this,” Thomas interrupted coming back in through the window. “Miss Sinclair.” he nodded as he quickly walked past her.

“Alex!” Addison exclaimed. 

Alex blushed and smiled coyly. “Oops?” ----

“What’s on your mind?” Alex asked, noticing Thomas’s sudden distant expression as they reclined in bed in their hotel room overlooking the moonlit Hawaiin ocean. She brought her hand to his face, her thumb caressing his cheek.

Thomas propped himself up on his elbow and leaned into her touch. “I was just thinking about today. The thought of losing you….” his voice trailed off. 

“But, you didn’t, we’re fine!” Alex comforted him. “It could have happened to anyone.”

“I know… and yet, that is not exactly what is troubling me,” Thomas admitted.

“Did I miss something else?” Alex questioned curiously.

“I was referring to my proposal,” Thomas sighed heavily.

“Oh! ... You’re not regretting it are you?” Alex worried, running her finger over her engagement ring.

“Quite the opposite.,” Thomas explained. “I know that moment felt impetuous, but I promise you, I have thought about this for a while. I’ve been planning to ask for weeks. I just wanted it to be perfect... you deserve nothing less than extraordinary, but I failed to find the perfect place, the perfect ring, or the perfect words. Then today, when I thought I lost you, I feared I might never get another chance, but I can’t leave it at that. You deserve more.”

Thomas got out of bed and knelt on one knee in front of her. 

“You don’t have to do this,” Alex sat up in the bed and moved closer to him. “I already said yes!”

“Just let me do this,” Thomas requested his face determined yet completely vulnerable. “You asked me what was on my mind, well here it is…

Alex, when we started this journey, I never thought we’d end up here. I never expected to feel like this about you, or anyone for that matter. I had spent so long shutting the world out, that I missed the things that were right in front of me. I kept you at arm’s length for so long, but you found a way in despite my walls. I know I’m not the easiest man to love, but you love me anyway. You saw something inside of me that I forgot was there. If today has proven anything, it is that the future is uncertain and yet, there is one constant in my life that I am certain of and have been for quite some time; and that is you. I love you with all my heart, mind, and body. If you let me, I promise that I will always do my best to protect you and keep you safe. I will spend every day of the rest of our lives striving to be the man you deserve. You are my world, Alex. I love you overwhelmingly and completely. I don’t want to spend another moment without you knowing exactly how I feel. I know that together we can face anything the future holds. So, if you will still have me…. Alex, will you do me the honor of being my wife?”

Alex nodded as a parade of silent tears streamed down her face. “Yes!” She leaned over letting her lips meet his. “Yes! Of course! My answer will always be yes!” She breathed between kisses. “I love you! Always!”

Thomas wrapped his arms around her and held her close. If he could will the world outside that room to cease to exist he would, because the only world he needed was safely in his arms.

Baby Hunt?

Setting/Notes: So I lied when I posted before and said that I only had 2 fics for this week. I realized @choicesseptemberchallenge for Day 8 is Baby and I already had this. I was saving it for when I write my Baby Hunt series, but you can have this much now :)

“Have you ever thought about having children,” Thomas asked as he held Alex in his arms. 

“I was never the girl who pictured having a big family with kids,” Alex began.

“Oh,” Thomas expressed.

Alex shifted in her position so she could face him. She cupped his cheek with her hand. She let her thumb caress him softly. “Let me finish.” Alex smiled. “Growing up, I never imagined having kids, but I don’t want to miss out on sharing anything with you. I’ve had a lot of time to think and reevaluate our situation. I would be open to having children… with you, if you want to.”

Thomas kissed her lips softly. 

“Is that what you want,” Alex asked.

“I never expected to be a father either, but watching Chris with his kid. I want that. I want that for us,” Thomas pushed a strand of hair behind Alex’s ear. “It doesn’t have to be right away, but, I want us to have a baby, to be a family.”

“I think you’ll be a great father,” Alex admitted. “I don’t know anyone more loving, caring, and protective than you.”

“Nor do I know anyone more generous, kind, witty, and beautiful than you,” Thomas smiled. 

“I just don’t want our kid to grow up with nannies and tutors. I want to be apart of his or her life. I want us to be there for every moment,” Alex acknowledged.

“I feel the same way. I would never ask you to give up a project for me or our family. I thought maybe we could work something out where we alternate projects. That way, whichever of us is not engaged in a film would be there to take care of our child. Plus we would never get stuck filming in different parts of the globe,” Thomas suggested. 

“You’ve really been thinking about this.” Alex’s eyes filled with admiration. 

“If you asked me to give up filmmaking to be with you and any future children, I would. I would always miss my art, but I have never loved anything as much as I love you. I would give up everything for you,” Thomas pressed.

“I would never ask that of you,” Alex smiled. “Alternating projects is the perfect compromise.”

Thomas placed soft kisses on Alex’s forehead, nose, cheek, and finally her lips. Alex could feel him smiling beneath his determined mouth. “I love you, Alex. More than you could ever imagine.”

“I love you too, my Thomas.” Alex wrapped her arms around his neck and pulled his lips back to hers.

Nostalgia

Setting/Notes: [Day 25 – Nostalgia in @choicesseptemberchallenge] I outlined the idea for this fic after reading RCD3 Chapter 3. It originally ended with Alex giving Thomas a Super 8 camera, but since she does that later in the canon book, I took that part out.

Alex grabbed the remote and sat down on the couch next to Thomas. 

“What sorry excuse for cinema are we enduring tonight?” Thomas chided, taking some jalapeno popcorn from the bowl. 

“It may have been criticized as being a bit pretentious and overly cliche, but I suspect tonight’s feature film will be to your liking,” Alex explained. She leaned back on the couch and pressed play.

A black and white image of a cat licking its paw filled the screen as a young boy’s voice talked over the scene, “What do I care about the purring of one who cannot love, like the cat?”

“Maurice?” Thomas muttered under his breath. “How did you?”

“You talked about L’Ennui Eternal the other day. I asked Rachel if she could find it. Even though you criticized it, you lit up with such joy in that moment. I know how you feel about nostalgia and spending too much time dwelling on the past, but I think you need to take a step back and find your raison d’etre. Find the why to your filmmaking and you’ll find the what,” Alex offered. 

“My attention has been singularly focused on what my next project might be,” Thomas admitted. “Back then, I made a movie because I could. Because it felt right. It was how I found I could express myself. It’s more complicated now.” 

“It doesn’t have to be,” Alex responded. “You’ve spent so long being The Thomas Hunt that I think you’ve forgotten who that really is and why he fell in love with movies. I know your next project will come once you remember why you are here.”

“Perhaps,” Thomas put his hand on top of hers and squeezed it gently. “You always know what to say.” He turned his attention back to the movie. 

“Let us beware of saying that death is the opposite of life. The living being is only a species of the dead, and a very rare species,” a young Thomas stated. “I still live, I still think: I still have to live, for I still have to think.” 

“Wow. You weren’t kidding when you said took most of the dialogue straight from Nietzsche,” Alex expressed.

“I forgot how nihilistic this film was,” Thomas critiqued. “Promise me that if we have children one day, we will expose them to multiple perspectives, before requiring them to decide if the world is meaningless.”

“Of course, dear. Do you think they have a lullaby version of Descartes and Kant? We will also have to specify that we really mean Plato and not Play-dough when we are talking about toddler gifts,” Alex smiled.

“I know you’re being sarcastic, but my point remains,” Thomas reassured her. 

Alex rested her head on his shoulder as they continued to watch the home movie.

Loss [of Power]

* * * The Art of Loving Thomas Hunt Fan Fiction Masterlist * * * – – – Characters: Alex, Thomas Hunt, Laura Spencer (Alex’s mom-mentioned)

Setting/Notes: This is going to take place during RCD 3 Chapter 14 when Thomas and Alex are in Iowa because LA doesn’t really get thunderstorms that cause a loss of power.  [ Day 11 – Loss for @choicesseptemberchallenge]

It was a dark and stormy afternoon. Rain thrashed against the windows as the wind blew the shutters against the house. Lightning flashed through the sky and thunder roared around them.

“I hope my mom’s okay,” Alex said looking up from her computer screen. She had been reviewing notes for The Secret of Ninradell.

“I’m sure she’s safe at work,” Thomas answered. He clicked his pen repeated against the blank pages of the open notebook in front of him. “You keep telling me that thunderstorms like this are common here. Even if it does sound like the world is ending?”

Thomas turned his head toward the window as hail began to ping against the glass.

Alex smiled as she looked over to Thomas. “Can I just say I love that you are afraid of thunderstorms.”

“I’m not afraid of them,” Thomas protested indignantly. “I just have a strong aversion to them. Remember, I’ve spent most of my life in Southern California where there are perhaps 3 thunderstorms a year.”

“It’s just...during earthquakes, you barely bat an eye when the floor is literally shaking beneath our feet, but a Mid-west thunderstorm has you nervous,” Alex teased.

“As I stated before I’m used to earthquakes. Thunderstorms and tornadoes, not as much,” he answered.

Alex reached across the table and took Thomas’s hand in hers. “I’ve got you.”

A blinding flash of light streaked across the sky. BOOOOOM–The crack of thunder was deafening, causing even Alex to jump. She felt Thomas’s hand tremble in hers. 

Another clap of thunder rang out, rattling the house. With it, the lights flickered off, leaving Thomas and Alex sitting with only her computer screen illuminating the room around them. 

Alex reached for her phone and turned the flashlight on. Thomas’s pale face looked back at her beneath the glow of her phone. 

“Come on.” Alex offered. “We should wait out the storm in the hallway, away from the windows, just in case.”

Thomas held her hand and followed her into the hallway. Alex slid to the floor near the middle of the hallway, leaning her back up against the wall. Thomas gently sat down beside her, never letting go of her hand. Alex checked the local news social media to see if there were any updates on the weather. “It looks like the thunderstorm has caused widespread loss of electricity. The whole county is without power,” Alex reported. “My mom texted to say she is still at work and they’re safe. She’ll wait the storm out there.”

Thomas nodded. He stared through the darkness at the wall across from them. 

Thunder continued to rumble around the house, shaking the walls. 

“It looks like we’re going to be without power for a while,” Alex explained having looked at the electric company’s page for updates. “I’m going to get some candles. I’ll be right back.”

Alex gave Thomas’s hand a reassuring squeeze before leaving him. She returned momentarily with a handful of candles, which she placed around the hallway before lighting them one at a time. 

“There. That’s better,” Alex exclaimed as she returned to Thomas. “Thunderstorms were always my favorite growing up. I loved watching the lightning dance across the sky.”

“That makes one of us,” Thomas stated. 

Alex kissed his cheek as she sat down beside him. She gently guided Thomas’s head onto her shoulder. He didn’t resist. She rested her head on top of his. His fingers found hers again in her lap. 

“The worst of the storm should pass within the hour,” Alex reassured him. “For now, we’ll just wait the storm out here.”

“I love you,” Thomas whispered as he leaned against Alex for support.

“I love you, too,” Alex smiled.
