Hello! I let this sit in my inbox for over two weeks because I really just had a lot to say about Amy Dunne and why she is not, in fact, the feminist icon Tumblr has made her out to be over the past few years since the movie was released. I’m specifically saying the movie because that seems to be where a lot of this discourse originally started. Tumblr seems to have this weird thing where they have to force pretty much every single form media into two boxes: Pro-feminist or anti-feminist. And because a lot of the women who hail Amy as a hero twist her motivations to shove her into their pro-feminist box, they completely lose the point. I remember once I saw someone say that Amy was a woman who was driven crazy by her cheating husband and that she was a metaphor for all wives who had been cheated on and fantasized about going on a revenge spree.
No.
Gillian Flynn has built a career on writing about fascinating women that are allowed to be evil simply because they are evil. Yes, society has a big impact on why they are the way that they are, but their actions are their own. Amy didn’t frame Nick for her “murder” as some kind of stand against cheating husbands across the globe. She did it because he betrayed her after she morphed herself into “Cool Girl” to appeal to him. I think this is where the movie kind of tripped up. They added the phenomenal work of art that was the Cool Girl monologue (I will go back and read that passage over and over again because it’s brilliant) but left out some of the nuances that show just who Amy Dunne really is. She isn’t a misogynist. She isn’t a misandrist. She hates the world. She looks down on other women and looks down on all men. She hates every single person in the entire world who isn’t herself, and for that reason, she has no problem disposing of those she finds useless and, even worse, she has zero morals which allows her to seek vengeance against those she despises: Hilary Handy, Desi and his mother, false rape accusations, the entire plot of the book, etc.
One of the many things that made Gone Girl as brilliant as it was is that there isn’t a single character who is likable. And that’s where nuance comes in. Amy’s Cool Girl monologue has been heralded as this fantastic feminist speech. Out of context, I can see where they’re coming from. But then you read the book, you watch the movie, and it’s very different.
What Amy wants is to be the Amazing Amy her parents created even while trying to convince readers and herself that she doesn’t want to be amazing anymore. She chooses the option that will make her seem the most amazing, whether it’s as the dead wife of an abusive unfaithful husband (let’s not forget she was going to kill herself to ensure Nick was sentenced to death) or as the escaped sex slave of a jealous ex boyfriend who was trying her hardest to return to her husband, or as a mother to a newborn child with her happy husband.

FINALLY SOMEONE AGREES! i looooaaathe the notebook and one of my main reasons has always been that james marsden's character deserved a lot better.
YES I AM RIGHT THERE WITH YOU!! i don’t like the movie but i still have Thoughts lmao and imo, allie and noah were awful for each other. maybe as a summer romance when you’re 17 years old it can work out, but they didn’t mature enough to have a great relationship as adults. #justiceforlon2k20 lets make a kickstarter
