Red Dwarf 30 Day Challenge Day 7: Favourite Quote
Red Dwarf 30 Day Challenge: Favorite Set
I absolutely adore Lister and Rimmer's quarters during the first two series and that's in part because I think it really encapsulates the more optimistic side of the show very well. Despite the default cramped, colorless layout of the quarters (perfectly emblematic of the corporate JMC), the various touches that the two have provided it (Lister's photos and posters and Rimmer's smoking signs and newspaper clippings and that random inflatable banana I love you) make it feel like a home. Even before being alone in deep space after the death of humanity, the nature of living under late stage capitalism is already a stifling, depressing prospect, but even before the accident- and after it- Lister and Rimmer take those unfortunate circumstances they're in and make something out of it, and I find it very touching 🥹

Day 28: Favourite Character
No contest - Dave “Cinzano Bianco” Lister.
I’m not sure if it was the first episode I saw, but some time in the 90s I saw “Justice” and was drawn to the fact that this scruffy young slob who in most other shows would be a minor character was the protagonist. He may technically be a petty criminal according to this episode, but in the scene where he and Rimmer argue about whether to shoot the simulant - whom they believe to be unarmed - he demonstrates a strong sense of morality. That was the scene which made him my favourite character.
Lister is just a lovable character most of the time. Yes, he’s a slob, but he has a good heart and knows how to bring people up rather than dragging them down which appeals to me as an optimist myself. The gif below is an early example of him uniting the crew. Can you imagine Series 1 Cat helping to organise anything?
He’s also the champion of the underdog, as we see when he teaches Kryten to lie. He’s cute, romantic and a natural leader despite not aspiring to be one.
Just a shame about the tone deafness, but no-one’s perfect. ;)

Final post
One thing you hope to see in the new miniseries
I don't know who created this fan poster for a then-hypothetical series XI, but they nailed what I would like to see. Let's go back to the Parallel Universe. Catch up with Deb, Arlene and the Dog. See how Jim and Bexley are doing. I don't think Judy Pascoe is acting anymore, but I think she's still married to Robert Llewellyn, maybe she'll do it. If not, cast another Krytenne. Get Hattie back as Hilly. Maybe even show us Kristof Kochanski.
