Request: Reader gets drunk and calls her ex, Tony Stark, and gets an interesting response.
Pairing: Tony Stark x reader
Author’s Note: This part may be slightly slow, you may love it I don’t know. Next part though Tony comes in.
Warning: Underage drinking, semi cuss words
Three months ago your life turned upside down. Three months ago Pepper called Tony saying she wanted to give them another try. You thought he was joking when he said he wanted to get back with her, that he wanted to leave you.
No one of course knew about you two. He never told the team or the world, and you never told your family or friends. Tony said he didn’t want to force you into the light that is his public world with you being so young, but now you wonder if it was because he had been hoping for Pepper to come back.
“(Y/N)! You’re missing it!” Gabby, one of your best friends, shouts from the living room.
Quickly walking into the next room you feel your body freeze. Your eyes zone in on the screen to find Tony Stark guest starring on some tv talk show. Scanning his body you see nothing but happiness radiating off of him. Tears skate the rim of your eyes and you turn away before Gabby could notice.
“How did I get so lucky?” You whisper to no one in particular as you watch Tony sleep next to you.
Brushing your fingers lightly through his hair, you avoid trying to wake him. He has been so stressed out with trying to complete his next project. Since New York, he has been immersing himself in his work to the point it has you worried. Though looking at him right now, you would have never guessed his tough past or the weight on his shoulders. Instead you simply see a very bright and attractive young man live peacefully in his sleep.
“I think,” Tony wraps his arm around your waist and pulls you close to his body. “I think it’s the other way around.” He leans in for a kiss and captures yours with a smile.
Going back into the kitchen, you continue to load up bottled water into a half-iced filled cooler. Tonight your friends wanted to go down to “the slab” and hangout. Which of course normally means drinking, hence the reason for the water.
“Are you sure we won’t be a burden?” Your mother asks on the other side of the island. “The Inn down the street probably has a room.”
Your parent’s house at the moment is infested with bees so they are crashing at your place for the time being. No one is quite certain of when they will be able to return home, but there is no way you were going to let them pay to stay somewhere else.
“Mom, you and dad are welcome here anytime.” You assure her and give her a goodbye cheek kiss.
Of course there is an ulterior motive for suggesting they stay with you. Lately your parents have been wanting you to move back home. You can understand where they are coming from, since the break up you haven’t been yourself. That’s why you want them here, to show them that you are okay.
“Have fun,” she calls out. “You’ve been worrying me lately, so sad.”
Grabbing the last of your things you load them up into your car. Gabby quickly joins as Caroline, your other best friend, pulls into your driveway. Caroline lives in Boston, a good hour and a half away, but the distance has never been a problem with your group.
Loading up into the car the girls quickly chat it up as you are left with your thoughts. What you really want to do is get completely wasted, but Gabby ditched on being sober mom so that means you have to again. Slightly annoyed by it you try to brush it off and convince yourself that you’ll still have fun.
“Hey there’s the boys!” Caroline exclaims pointing toward two male figures. “Isn’t Joe cute?
You pretend like you didn’t hear her as you unload your car. You’re not going to lie, Joe is pretty cute but you can’t tell her you agree. She broke up with her boyfriend not too long ago and wants to date every guy she sees. All the power to her, you think to yourself, life is short.
Silently making your way down the slab you finally set up shop and take a dip in the water. Feeling a fish nibble on your side you softly push it away as you climb out. The water isn’t exactly crystal clear, you were lucky if you could see to the bottom of your thighs.
“Hand me a beer, please.” Carson quickly obliges and starts back up his conversation with Gabby.
Here’s the thing with these two, they both like each other but won’t admit it to the other. There are some complications such as her leaving to go back to college in a week, and the fact that Carson’s new job will cause him to move a few towns farther. But if they really liked each other you’d think it would be worth it.
“Careful (Y/N), you’re driving.” Caroline giggles as she squigs a drink of her beer.
Whispering bite me to yourself you take a seat in the water and everyone else follows closely behind. Quickly finishing your beer, Gabby then suggests that you all take some shots with the vodka. Agreeing, you pass around the bottle. Joe slily hands you his and you down both.
Knowing that Carson is a heavy weight, and that Joe isn’t drinking tonight, you decide to have a few more beers and vodka mixed with whatever weird juice Carson brought. Looking around you see that Gabby and Caroline are getting hit hard by their alcohol. You try to hide it from them but ultimately end up drinking half of it anyway. What's the harm? You have a reason to get hammered.
Finishing another drink you look around and see Caroline with Joe a few feet to your left, and Carson with Gabby off on your right. Gabby is really flirty when she’s drunk and is all over Carson laughing as she stumbles. Glancing over at Caroline you see Joe trying to keep her head above the water as she goes on and on about a fish that was right by her.
Struggling to walk over to the two, you get down and help position her to sit up. Once noticing you are there she yells that you are her best friend and that she loves you. Telling her you love her too, you whisper to Joe telling him not to let her drink anymore.
Feeling the intensity of the alcohol finally hit you, you climb out of the water and head over to your bag. Fishing out your phone you slide through your blurry contacts till you find his. Hitting the call button you hear the phone ring in your ear. Drunken confidence courses through your veins as you wait for him to pick up.
Getting his voicemail you curse as you wait for the beep.
“Gotta love caller ID.” Some of your words slur together. “I was just calling to let you know I saw you on the talk show. You look really happy, so I'm happy you and Pepper are back together. You and Pepper are gonna get married and have babies that will save the world. I’m sure of it! And here I’ll be,” a slight sob cracks through your lips. “Living in this small town, going back to college...”
You trail off as you see Joe trying to get Caroline to stand. She stumbles and laughs as he carefully wraps an arm around her torso. Caroline ruffles his hair causing him to smile as he sits her down on a chair next to him. A pinch of envy turns your veins cold as a tear falls down your face.
“You know I am surrounded by want-to-be couples, and I'm drunk. I’m outnumbered… wait no, we are odd numbered. Gabby has Carson and Caroline has Joe, and me? I am making a drunk call to an ex. There is no one here for me to talk too,” a full sob escapes you this time. “No one here that will try to keep me from having too many beers or to keep me from falling on these rocks.”
You try to get up and move farther away from the group. You don’t want them to hear you break down if it comes to that. As far as everyone knows you’ve never been with anyone, haven’t even gone out on a date.
“I just – OW!” You exclaim as you pull a piece of glass out of your foot. “I don’t know why I called. You obviously don’t care, just like everyone else in my life. My two sober guy friends couldn’t give a damn.” You sniffle back your tears as you feel your jaw start to shake. “Can’t blame them though, I’m the fifth wheel. Fuck I was the fifth wheel even when I had you. I can’t – ” this time a sob escapes you. “Fuck I can’t do this.”
You end the call as warm tears run down your cheeks. Knowing there was so much more you wanted to say but you know you shouldn’t. He is with Pepper, if he wanted to be with you he wouldn’t have picked her.
Staying on the farther side of the area you watch the pairs laugh and forget you exist. You’re not sure how you thought this would be fun. You may have consumed a lot of alcohol but you are internally keeping yourself in line. The boys wouldn’t be able to watch the three of you, no matter how much Carson insisted that he could.
“You guys it’s getting dark!” No one notices, getting up closer you try again. “Guys! We need to start making our way out of here.”
Finally hearing you, the boys load up the cars while you wrestle with the girls. You can feel yourself start to sober up, a part of you is relieved while the other wishes the boys left the cooler. The girls go on and on about how hot the boys are as you roll your eyes.
“(Y/N)’s couch is going to be much more comfortable than these rocks.” Joe says lifting Caroline to her feet.
“Shit!” Your hands cover your face. “My folks are staying with me. If they see them like this and smell the alcohol on my breath that is it. They’ll make me come back home.”
“Okay… where do we go then?” Carson asks annoyed.
You tell them you’ll figure it out, but that they just need to get them into the car. Stumbling ahead of the others you feel like you’re going to pass out. Stopping to take a deep breath you see a small glimmer of light from the tree line. Telling the others to keep going you make your way over to it.
Getting closer you can make out a silhouette of a heavier built man. Your heart starts to race thinking this is a bad idea. Problem is, he knows you’re there, or at least knows you know he is there.
Once only a few feet apart you recognize him. Happy catches you mid stumble and you exclaim his name. Wrapping him in a hug he softly pushes you away and comments on your breath.
“I guess it was a good thing Tony sent me here.” He mumbles.
“Tony? Tony sent you here?” Exasperated, your jaw hangs low.
Happy pulls out a device from his suit pocket. You can hear the dim beep from a sequence of what you could only guess are numbers. Holding what must be a phone to his ear he waits for someone on the other end to pick up. It’s all very quick and you don’t get to hear most of it as you throw up in a bush nearby.
“Come with me.” He lightly pulls at your elbow. “I’m taking you and your friends somewhere safe.”
“Take us where? Tell me why you are here.” You demand, placing your hands on your hips.
“I’m taking you to Tony.”
