On a brighter note to my last post: Anon who just requested Larys and bathing, I am laughing hysterically over your phrasing, so thank you, you cheered me up!
Hi! Regarding PMATWW (which I LOVE), when Olive chases Elizabeth down in the hallway and tells her that she doesn’t love Bill (twice) do you think she is lying? Or do you think she fell only for Elizabeth initially but then fell for Bill also later on by the time she gets hooked up to the lie detector and it’s revealed that she loves both? Also, why does she answer the question about wanting to have sex with Bill right away but hesitate so much before answering when asked about Elizabeth?
hi hello! these are great questions, and also of course fully open to interpretation – so i will be happy to offer my own (entirely subjective) sense of them.
so, part one: i think it’s difficult to quantify exactly when olive “fell in love” with bill, just as it would be for anyone in the real world, but i do think that she was drawn in first by elizabeth – and i think the film works to establish that in order to set the tone for the story it wants to tell. elizabeth expects the reverse (a younger female student falling for her older male professor – charming and friendly – and vice versa is predictable in a way that olive falling in love with his brilliant, charismatic asshole of a wife is not), but the movie will not let its audience accept that as the premise upon which the story is founded. it’s elizabeth’s paper that olive’s read, it’s elizabeth from whom olive initially aches to learn, and it’s elizabeth whose gravity first traps her in its orbit.
so while i would wager that olive doesn’t believe herself to be lying there (whatever she already feels about bill, which is certainly something), i would also suggest that her emphatically disagreeing with elizabeth has to do with elizabeth’s perspective on the situation – here the concerns she voices suggest she views the situation as something to which she is not party, as something that offers inherent threat to her world (which…remains true, albeit in a different way). as something that rewrites her as an outsider, that – as she so feared – pushes her right back into bill’s shadow. and i think olive finds it absolutely essential in this moment to convey to elizabeth her abject horror of that notion – elizabeth is not the outsider but the ultimate insider, not the shadow but the sun that casts it, from whom olive cannot bear to turn away. the urgency of this confession stems from many things, but one significant factor is how much olive needs elizabeth to know that she is not here to take anything from elizabeth; all she has she has to give, and it’s elizabeth who holds the cards.
and part two: obviously there’s a lot going on in the lie detector scene (and so much of it that lives inside what isn’t said!), but i do think it begins with an olive sort of at war with herself. on the one hand, she begins by answering the questions almost as a challenge, as defiance; of course she can be happy! of course she can love brant! why won’t they stop making her life so difficult! find a new hobby, married assholes! but she also knows what she wants, and if she didn’t want to confess all of it – including to herself! – she wouldn’t be there. by the time she gets to the questions about having sex with them, she knows exactly what the lie detector’s going to say, can no longer pretend to them or herself any different – and you’re right that she says “no” (yes) faster when bill asks about himself, even though she stumbles a little. but i think it’s very clear where bill falls on the response scale (his reaction is very, very unlikely to be negative, let’s just say), whereas elizabeth’s reaction is much, much more nebulous, despite that hilarious, incredible exchange between the three of them in the classroom. it’s why she won’t look toward her at first, and why she then won’t do anything but. everyone in that room knows that the steps they take next are entirely in elizabeth’s hands, and the answer to that question in particular turns everything fully over to her (which didn’t work out great the first time), exposing olive and all of her most vulnerable places all over again. it’s the final answer; it lays all of her desires bare. and all three of them know it’s elizabeth who could trample them for good.
(p.s. I’M SO GLAD YOU LOVE IT!!!)
Just a heads up, folks: two (2) more of the requests have developed a mind of their own and are running rampant, ergo they will likely take longer than the others to complete. Oops!
Hi!
Are y’all doing another rwrb week this year? I tried to look around but didn’t see any info, so I wanted to check with you!
Hey!
There are not plans currently to hold a rwrb week in this year. We've 'just' held an event in August to celebrate one year of the movie's release, instead of a week-long celebration.
I plan on doing something next year and will definitely pin any announcement post, so it'll be easily found on this blog.
hey, I haven’t been v active recently and tbh it’s because I have been getting lots of asks and messages asking me to donate to palestinian causes: don’t get me wrong, when I had money over the last few months I was donating money wherever I could, but I’ve lost my job due to my mental health issues and as much as I feel awful about it I have nothing to donate. I have reblogged the posts of everyone who messaged me (if I have forgotten anyone in the backlog I am so sorry) and will continue to do so, but please understand that as much as my heart goes out to all of you I genuinely have no money to donate. I really wish things were different, but with unemployment, student debt and dental costs I am completely wiped out
Hiii, I know this isn’t related to First Prince, but I'm conducting a survey for my master's thesis on 'The Impact of Brand Identity on Music Artists' Success and Public Perception.' I need 30 more participants to reach the 300 I need, so it would mean a lot if you could spare a few minutes to fill it out and share it. Your responses are anonymous (so feel free to share your honest opinions), and it won’t take more than a few minutes of your time.
You can take the survey here: https://forms.gle/nM5sYmxwd2DG7BWj7
Thank you so much for your help!🙏
Wishing you all the best with your thesis! <3
