Re:Grow Chapter 2 Page 6
So I’ve decided I’m going to just post the comics I’ve worked on myself ands maybe set up a Patreon down the line...? So here’s the first chapter of “Re:Grow”. The rest of the comic is here in the comments.
“Then what keeps you from going back into the Deep?” she asked. “Even if you know it hurt you and it was using you... what if you still sometimes get tempted? If everything outside gets too overwhelming and too weird, what keeps you from shoving yourself back?”
“A lot of work, mostly,” Eli replied. “Rosemara told me once: you’ve got to give yourself small things to do, each day. Say, ‘I can’t go back until I watch this TV show’ or ‘I can’t leave until I clean up the dishes’. A party to get to tomorrow or a video game releasing next week. Little things.”
“That’s it?” Harper couldn’t keep the disbelief out of her voice. “The secret to stopping the Fae is video games?”
“Basically, yes.” Eli shrugged. “Trite as it sounds, you have to find all the little things in life that give you joy and surprise and hold onto them.” He smiled. “The Deep can’t surprise you, once you get used to it. That’s the real world’s big advantage over it. You don’t have to love being human or living life--it’s enough to just be bored and curious about what happens next. That’ll keep you around.”
GUESS WHO REACHED 50,000 WORDS FOR NANOWRIMO FOR THE FIRST TIME?! To celebrate, I decided to take a break from writing and do a self-indulgent drawing of the main character of my Nanowrimo project. Say hi to Harper! And now, here’s a WIP pitch:
RE:grow is a story loosely about growing up, and also about fairies. It follows 17-year-old Harper Bell, who stumbled into the mystical world of the Deep and--with the help of a fairy guardian--became a magical heroine five years ago. But after an argument leads to her being kicked out, she has to pull together the pieces of her old life while fending off threats from the other “gifted” children and monsters. Things get stranger still when she learns that her own dad is a retired magical hero, and part of a mysterious underground community of anti-fairy exterminators. As the pressure builds up against her, she has to choose between revenge or loyalty.
How do you become an adult when you only know how to be a gifted child?
