Re- Appropriation Example

The Bristol street artist Banksy took the famous painting of the Mona Lisa and re-appropriated it by adding a gun to it. This references all the war and violence in the world today. Also how guns have become more common and now most people admit to carrying guns, and in the news we always here about gun crimes.

Final Review

Overall I found this project really hard as I struggled to get my head around all the different concepts and how to approach this project. Once I understood what the different approaches were I just needed to find some material then decide what to do with it. I feel in my video I appropriated the clips about the horsemeat scandal as they still have a similar context not far from the original source. With the badger clips I feel I re-appropriated the clips as I have changed their context to something completely different from the original source. I feel my final outcome meets the brief and is strong as it explores a relevant subject matter for today in a comedy way to make the audience think about what they are eating and how the food has got to there plates. It links two different news stories into one video piece for the public to see. If I were to do this project again I would read more texts about appropriation to inform my practise more. 

We presented in a very formal way to the class our blogs full of research and our final videos, we did not get any feedback as it was a very formal, marks then and there final presentation.

Final Appropriation Video

Now that I found the technique I was going to use I collected a range of news video clips about the horsemeat scandal and badgers to cut and edit together to create my final version of my video. I decided I was going to use the same badger clip throughout the film to keep consistency and make my message stronger than random clips.

  I wanted to start off the video with the opening graphics for the BBC news so I found them online and put them at the start of the video. I then took each clip I found and edited the bits I wanted from it keeping in mind that last time it was to long winded so needs to be short and snappy. I then played with the order of the clips until it was right, then I added the badger clip and put it in each section three times. I did this for effect and also the repeated movement of the badger is strong and funny so gets the message across.

Newsreader Saying Badger

I had a re-think and tried out the idea of a newsreader saying the word badger as it would fit in with the context of the film and the whole news report. This worked ok but I felt I could still find a better solution so this is my backup solution if I do not find anything more effective. It does not stop the flow of the film and links in to all the other clips.

Badger Picture And Audio

Next I tried adding a photograph of a badger then adding the badger audio to it to fit into the news report. I tried to put just an image into the film but it would not let me so that is why I added the audio. I felt this did not work very well either as the static picture seemed to take away from the message I was putting across. It also disrupted the flow of the film so it was hard to watch, as it seemed very unresolved as an outcome.

Different Editing Techniques

After deciding on the replacement word I had a try at a few different techniques of how best to incorporate the badger theme into the video clips.

  Firstly I tried just an audio of the word badger but in the video editing programme I was using it would not let me have just audio on its own so it kept putting it over the audio of the clips I already there. This created a weird two audio tracks in certain parts of my film, which I felt, really did not work, as you could not understand what was being said and seemed really unprofessional.

Cassette Boy

  I looked into him, as I liked the idea of audio created to make someone say something out of context as a re-appropriation idea.

He is an anonymous person who started off just cutting bits of audio together to make famous people say things they normally would not say. Then he moved onto visuals as well and now targets popular TV programs with his humorous editing of them to give them new context. His work is extremely funny and shows the audience how everyday programs use weird dialogues if we only hear some of the words and phrases. I will take inspiration from this and experiment with the idea of editing audio to make people say funny things as this re- appropriation is very effective.

A Movie - Bruce Conner 1958

This appropriation piece uses clips from old films to reference the key elements of Hollywood film storyline, sex, violence, death, action and destruction. The title of the piece is a play on words as you think you will see a movie which in some ways you do as all the key element normally in a movie are there but just not from the same movie and scenes repeated. I liked the idea of taking the key part of something and making it new buy taking them from different sources.
