Hearing Bells Ring
Anonymous requested: chani x reader school love scenario lol
Damn okay this is my first time writing for the kid so I’m a bit nervous. Chani is going to be a senior so I’m gonna write this as him being a senior. I hope that’s okay with you. (Sorry for the late post. I’ve been busy with school… but remember to stream O Sole Mio!!!)
Summary: High school sucked. It sucked especially when your best friend, who’ve you known since the first day of this hell hole, wanted to ditch school. Which only left you with your other (extremely attractive) best friend, who you were pretty sure just saw you as a friend. You just hoped everything would be over when that final bell rang.
You wanted to kill her. You stared at the text she had sent you which read, “Sorry, I didn’t feel like coming today~ Have fun with him~” Then an emoticon of Ryan the Lion (who looks like a bear) winking.
She definitely had a death wish.
You muttered a curse in English before sending her death threats in English, all capital letters. She wouldn’t really understand most of what you would send her, but you knew and it felt good to send her that sort of stuff.
“What’re you doing?” a voice said from behind you, making you jump and almost drop your phone.
Turning around to glare at the boy who scared you, you clutched your phone close to your chest. “Don’t do that! I almost dropped my phone. My parents would’ve killed me.”
He laughed. “Sorry. But seriously, what’s up? Why are you alone on the first day of school?”
“Heejin isn’t coming today.”
“What? Why not?”
“Because she hates her best friend,” you grumbled as you two walked towards the gym for opening ceremonies.
“I’m pretty sure it’s the opposite if anything.”
You rolled your eyes, nudging the boy with your elbow. “First off, shut up. Second, you’re awfully happy in the morning. What happened?”
“Am I not allowed to be happy?”
“Kang Chani, happy? In the morning?” You scoffed at the words. “It even sounds weird to me.”
He glared at you before flicking your forehead.
“OW!”
“I’m human, just so you know.”
“You sure don’t act like it,” you said, rubbing at the red spot on your forehead. “I really hate when you do that.”
“Well, sometimes you deserve it.” He smirked at the visible red. “That’s gonna last a pretty long time.”
“You’re a douche, you know that?”
“You love me.” He teased, ruffling your hair.
Swatting his hand away, you mentally made a note to kill both of your best friends. True, you did love him. Obviously, it was a different kind that he felt for you. So, it was better not to bring it up. “Wait, when did you color your hair?”
“Huh? This?” He pointed at his hair, eyebrows pulled together in confusion. “I’ve had it all summer.”
“Don’t lie to me!”
“Okay, okay,” he chuckled. “I colored it two weeks ago. Hwiyoung-hyung and I had a bet-”
“And you lost.” Shaking your head, you patted his shoulder. “You should know he will always win.”
“Shut up.” His hand pushed yours away.
“But why orange?”
He rolled his eyes. “Because Dawon-hyung said that I’ll look like a carrot.”
“Wow, what a nice hyung.”
“Inseong-hyung and Jaeyoon-hyung weren’t much help. They said that I’ll look like an orange.”
You paused and tilted your head. “Huh. They’re not wrong…”
“Oh my god, please be quiet.” He sighed, pulling a black beanie out of his jacket’s pocket and pulling it on. “Rowoon-hyung and Youngbin-hyung were the only ones who were against it but it was 6 against 2 which meant…”
You tried to hold in your laughter. His hair looked very Halloween themed. “You became a pumpkin.”
“Can you please not?” The glare he threw you made you put your hands up.
“I’m just saying. Still, you look cute.”
He cleared his throat, cheeks turning red as he adjusted the beanie. “We should hurry, we might be late.” Without another word, he wrapped a hand around your wrist and pulled you faster towards the gym.
There was still a few minutes left before the ceremony would start but the room was already pretty filled. You two had learned earlier that you were in the same class, much to your joy. Sadly, Heejin wasn’t in the same class. (It was the class next door, but still, you wanted both of your friends in your class.)
“Wanna walk together after?”
“We’re in the same class, dummy.”
He rolled his eyes. “You could make friends in this line while we stand here, I don’t know. You might shun me this year.”
“Stop being an idiot and stand in line.” You pushed him towards the boys line for your shared class. “I’ll talk to you after this, geez.”
He smiled, waving at you.
You waved back before he went to stand behind the only other boy in the line.
The opening ceremony was boring, as always. Right as it ended, Chani practically ran back to you and threw an arm over your shoulders.
“Let’s head to class!”
“I hate that we’re in the same class…” you grumbled under your breath, the boy not being able to hear it. It was a lie, but you hoped the mantra would help your frantic heart calm down.
It was just luck that not only were you in the same class as your best friend/crush, but you sat right next to him. In the back of the class, no less.
Which meant, he would try everything to annoy and talk to you.
“You know, Zuho-hyung said that I could help him.”
“Chani, shut up. We’re supposed to be talking about the metaphors this English sentence uses.”
“It’s not like we’re the only ones talking off topic.”
True. The whole class was discussing things other than the metaphors your American English teacher had told you to discuss. To be fair, the metaphors were easy and your teacher had given you all a large amount of time to discuss.
“Lighten up. Are you tense because it’s the first day of school but your best friend isn’t here?’ He frowned, putting down his pencil.
“What’re you talking about? You’re my best friend.”
His cheeks reddened again, something that was quickly becoming your favorite thing. “I meant Heejin.”
“I mean, I’m more tense about it being the first day more than anything,” you admitted, looking down at your papers and fidgeting with the cuffs of your school jacket.
“You don’t need to be though. I’m right next to you. I’m always next to you.”
This time, it was your turn for your cheeks to warm. “Thanks…”
Both of you turned away from each other, faces red, when your English teacher announced time was up.
Before the English teacher could start on the discussion, the bell rang. You jumped at the sound, heart beat in your ears.
You really hoped your best friend couldn’t hear it.
“Would anyone like to volunteer to clean this classroom? It only has to be one person today. There isn’t much to do since it’s the first day, so it won’t take long.”
The class was quiet and everyone avoided looking directly at the teacher.
You looked over at the boy beside you. When he met eyes with you, they twinkled with mischief. That wasn’t good.
Realizing what he was thinking, your eyes widened. “Don’t-!”
“Y/N would love to do it!” Chani said, raising his hand up.
Your eyes narrowed and you whispered a threat. “Do you want to die today, Kang Chani?”
“That’s great! Thank you for volunteering Y/N! I know it’s just the first day and there isn’t much to clean, but I’m grateful.” Your teacher smiled at you and you could only stutter back a ‘sure’.
The boy beside you smiled brightly when you practically shot daggers with your eyes.
You were gonna kill him.
The class was long gone but you waited until the whole school was quiet enough that you could hear a pin drop. There were three basic chores you had to do, clean the windows, clean the floors, and clean the board. It was easy enough since all were already pretty clean.
You started with the windows, standing on some of the chairs to reach the top. Within a few minutes, you were done and immediately started on the floors. You heard the door to the classroom slide open and looked over to the intruder before focusing back on mopping the floors.
“What do you want Chani? You feel bad for volunteering me? You gonna help?”
He scoffed, taking a seat at one of the desks closest to you and taking out his phone. “No. I just needed somewhere to hang out until 5. Since Heejin isn’t here, you’re the next best thing.”
“Gee.” You glared at him. “Thanks.”
Without looking up, he replied, “No problem.”
After a kick to the chair, he turned to kick you, and the exchange went on for a while before you both went back to your individual activities.
You were soon done cleaning the floors and started to put the chairs back to their orginal place. Thankfully, the orange haired boy helped you out. Of course, though, he sat back down as you started to clean the white board.
Cursing him out, you scrubbed at the faint red spot in the middle of the board.
Chani scrolled through his SNS feed. “Hey, that new Jackie Chan movie just came out. The Foreigner.”
“Oh, yeah. I heard about that movie.” You paused, turning to him and leaning back on the board. “It seems good. I wanted to go see it.”
“Do you wanna go together? Just the two of us?” He got up and walked over to you.
You blinked at him. Was he asking you on a date? It was better not to think about it, since it probably wasn’t. “Yeah, sure. We’ve gone out together before, I don’t understand why you have to make it like a big thing.”
He frowned at you, grabbing one of your hands. “That’s because it’s a big thing. I knew you were stupid, but I didn’t think you were this stupid.”
“Huh? Did you just call me stupid?” You raised your other hand, about to strike him on the head but he grabbed that hand as well.
“I’m asking you on a date, dummy.”
“Oh.”
“Yeah, ‘oh’.” He rolled his eyes but they shook in nervousness. “So, do you still wanna go after hearing it’s actually a date?”
Of course you did! But you knew saying that to Chani would just make him cocky. “Yeah, I still wanna go.” Damn it, wrong answer.
He smirked. “Of course, you still wanna go. I am me, after all.” He dodged your fist, laughing. He was still laughing as he backed out of the classroom. “I’ll pick you up at 6! Wear that pretty dress your mom bought you on your birthday!”
You threw the whiteboard eraser at him. “Just leave already! Damn it!”
He ducked, the whiteboard eraser flying over him before winking and leaving you to your devices.
With a sigh, your shoulders dropped. The kid could be so egotistical sometimes.
When you heard footsteps approaching, you were ready to curse him out. Your best friend appeared again, walking quickly towards you.
“What do you want…” You froze as he held your cheeks in his hands. “Chani?”
His lips pressed against your forehead. When he pulled away, he looked down at you with flushed cheeks.
Your jaw was dropped, words failing you.
“I’ll see you tomorrow. Or… text me… Don’t go home late, it’ll make me worry.”
“Kang Chani? Worrying?”
He flicked the same place he kissed, satisfied with your yelp of pain. “Shut up, I’m human too.”
“That flick felt like it wasn’t though,” you whined, rubbing at the spot with a pout.
“Sorry.” He took your hands and kissed your forehead again. “Don’t take long, okay?’
You nodded. “Okay.”
“Hurry,” he said as he released you and stepped back. “Don’t keep me waiting for your text.”
“Just go.” You rolled your eyes.
He waved, turning and walking out into the hall. “See you later!”
You waited for a while before you were sure he was out of the building and letting out a deep breath. Sliding into one of the seats, you buried your face into your hands.
“I can’t believe I like that dork.”
