Imagine that you’re sitting on a bench outside between classes. You stare blankly at your feet, not really thinking, not really feeling anything except for a stinging emptiness. Lately you find yourself sad for seemingly no reason and unable to focus. In your detached state, you don’t hear the loud steps of heavy boots.

Oi, _______, what are you doin’?

Your head snaps up when your name is said. Mondo towers above you, looking down with such an expression that you can’t really tell what it is. He motions for you to move over, and you allow him to sit beside you on the hard wooden bench. You say your hellos, but your gaze shifts back to the grass.

Yo, you alright? You’re actin’ weird.

You sigh, and begin to try to explain how you’re feeling, Mondo listening patiently to you. You can’t seem to put your words together and are becoming increasingly frustrated. Mondo cuts you off by grabbing your arm, his eyes wide.

Have you been talkin’ to anybody about this? You quietly shake your head. After speaking a little more with Mondo, you agree to see the school counselor with him. You find it really comforting to know that someone’s there for you, and you make sure to hug him tightly before saying your goodbyes.

“…And make sure you have a tight grip on the handle.” Oowada Mondo was instructing you as you sat on the seat of your new motorcycle. He had his hands on your waist, keeping you steady on the vehicle. Your motorcycle hummed, wanting to move forward. You gripped onto the handles a little tighter, but since you were already gripping so hard your knuckles began to go white. He laid his hand on one of yours. “Not that tight.”

“S-Sorry,” you stuttered, blushing, before you loosened your grip. You and Mondo have been close friends for a while now, and it wasn’t until recently that you finally worked up the courage to ask him to teach you how to ride a motorcycle. At first he refused, saying that “it was too dangerous for you,” but after a little pouting and puppy-dog faces, he gave in. He even went out of his way to buy you your own motorcycle, which was greatly appreciated.

“Alright, remember everything I taught you,” he tells you, letting go. “Ride!”

You pressed on the gas and moved forward, a little faster than your liking, but you got used to it after a few seconds. The helmet you wore was a little loose and felt like sliding off (it was Mondo’s, it was designed especially for him because of his hair). You knew the shaking your body experience wasn’t because of the motorcycle itself, but because of the mixed feelings of fear and excitement you had welling within you. You drove around in small circles in the street, and every time you passed Mondo you would glance at him to check if he still had the proud smile on his face.

You find yourself lingering your eyes on him. For some reason, you just can’t seem to look away. Seeing him smile… It gave you butterflies. You saw him begin to mouth something, but you didn’t really process what he was saying until he started yelling.

“Watch out!”

You look in front of you.

A tree.

The world goes black.

You wake up to Mondo’s hair brushing against your forehead. You see his face, his eyes filled with worry. A sharp pain is registered in your ankle, and you can’t help but let out a little cry.

“[Name]! You’re awake! Thank god…” he mumbles. He has an icepack in his hand. He puts it on your ankle. “I was worried about you.”

“Wh…What happened…?” you can barely mumble. Your throat feels scratchy.

“You ran into a tree,” he says. “What did I say about paying attention to where you were going?!”

“I-I’m sorry!” yours eyes tear up. You’re so embarrassed. Here you spent so long trying to convince him to teach you, and this is what you do. You felt pathetic.

Suddenly, you feel his hands slide underneath your back and he pulls you up, into a hug. “Don’t scare me like that next time…”

“N-Next time…?” you barely voice.

“I’m not giving up on you yet. We just started!” he lets out a laugh before he wipes one of your tears away. “Please, don’t cry. Everyone has an accident sooner or later.”

This was a side of Mondo you’ve never seen. You’re used to the gruff, serious Mondo that would stutter and take back any sort of compliment or comment towards something cute. This Mondo was sympathetic and caring. This is a Mondo you grow to love in under ten second.

You wrap your arms around him. “Alright,” you say. “I won’t cry. Just as long as you’re there.” You two laugh as he ruffles your hair, and you stay in your sweet positions, hugging, embracing, loving for the next hour, taking in each other’s air.
