Part 6
“I’m a little hungry tonight. Good thing I don’t have to go far for a snack.”
The voice sent a cold shudder down your back as you felt the warmth of her breath against your neck. The alcohol still in your system had slowed your reaction just as Klaus had said, as did the surprise of it all. You knew you were going to die, just as your parents did, at the hands of a vampire as she pressed harder against your windpipe. Suddenly there was no longer pressure on your neck, the ability to breathe once more returned as you began to sputter and cough. A loud crash and growling assaulting your ears as your hand moved up to your throat.
“Rebekah! You will not harm her. Do you hear me?” Klaus’s voice called from the other side of the darkened room. A moment later, the lights flashed on as Hayley and Elijah stood in the doorway. Klaus had a blond woman by the neck against the wall. The same woman from the vision earlier.
“Let go of me brother! I wasn’t going to hurt her… much. I am starving! Just listen to her heart beating. Tell me it doesn’t sound delicious.” Klaus glared murderously at her as she glanced back to your face. The hunger was written all over her beautiful face as she struggled against her brother’s grip.
“You will not harm her, sister. She is under my protection. Do you understand?” Elijah stepped forward trying to diffuse the situation by pulling Klaus’s hand from her throat.
“And mine as well. [Y/N] helped Hayley when she did not have to.” Rebekah looked like a pouty child.
“Fine. None of you are any fun anymore. I remember a time when we would have all shared her blood, like a family.” Her blond hair swung around as she turned to stomp out of the room. It took a moment for you to process everything that had happened. Another Mikaelson sibling and she wanted your blood, lovely. You were staring off thinking about your death when a warm hand touched sides of your neck, bringing you back to the man who now stood in front of you.
“Are you alright, love?” His concern was not what you had expected. Though at this point he was nothing how you had thought the famed Niklaus Mikaelson would be. “You may have bruises in the morning. If you wish I will feed you my blood and there will be no trace of them or the injury to your ankle.”
“Oh… umm.. no. I will be fine. I just… I think I need to go home.” At that point, you felt unsafe even with the declarations of the two men. Klaus studied your face for a moment before he stood back to allow you movement.
“I will drive you home. You are still in no state to do so yourself.” With a single nod, you limped out of the room. The two vampires and the werewolf watching silently before glancing at each other. You were half way to the stairs when Klaus caught up to you. “My apologies [Y/N]. I did not think my sister would be idiotic enough to attack a guest of mine. I should have thought better of it and driven you home as you asked.”
There was sincerity in his tone as you stopped to look at him. You could see it in his eyes as well but there was more there. Or it felt as though there was, as he stared down at you. Perhaps your mind and eyes were playing tricks on you. Either way you just wanted to curl up in your bed. “It’s fine, really. Should be used to it by now. It’s happened a few times since I have come to New Orleans.”
“That does not make it right. I will do what I can to make sure it does not happen again, ever.” You shook your head as you slowly made your way down the stairs, one step at a time. The pain in your ankle really had not gotten any better.
“I don’t understand why though. Because I told Hayley how to get over her morning sickness?” Klaus was silent as he took each step behind you. “Look, I know that you were worried I was going to hurt your family or something. Now that you know I’m not, you don’t have to worry about me. I am here to… well I guess figure out what to do with the rest of my life. Since I don’t have to worry about losing the house.”
That revelation took you along a completely new thought process, almost forgetting the vampire that was barely a step behind you. It was hard to keep your mind on one topic when you had so much alcohol in your system. So many things would float around in your brain. Tonight was no different. However, you were becoming quite tired. “Hmm I wonder how much it would be to finish the green house?”
Klaus smiled a bit as he watched the back of your head and listened to you babble. He enjoyed listening to you talk. The cadence of your voice pulled him in and he found himself wanting to hear more. “Well the framework is done. It probably shouldn’t be too expensive.”
You were pulled from your distracted thoughts. The pair of you had made it to the bottom of the stairs finally. Turning to look at him with narrowed eyes. “How do you know the frame is finished?”
The smile that had been on his lips disappeared, only to be replaced with a look of guilt. He knew he should have kept his mouth shut but you did things that made him forget himself, like smiling. That smile of yours would have him on his knees begging for another if you truly ever flashed one in his direction.
“Klaus? How do you know the frame is finished? Were you at my house?” In an attempt to look mad you poked him in the shoulder. That was a mistake as he grabbed your hand and stepped closer. That forced another vision, which stopped your breathing for a moment.
“[Y/N]… I…”
The sight of yourself standing on your back porch, beer in hand, as you stared out at the darkness. You were looking right where the view came from. When the vision faded you pulled back from his embrace. “It was you! You were the one there in the trees. I knew someone was there. I could feel you.”
It took no time for your temper to flare. Klaus continued to look guilty. “I had to know who you were… if you were a threat to my family. One day this witch arrives in New Orleans. Everyone can feel your power. Within days, you had contact with multiple members of my family or acquaintances. I had to be sure.”
“Oh yes you made sure to tell me that when you scared the shit out of me the day we met. But it was more than that. You were there… you were there even after that. It hasn’t been just one time Klaus, has it?” He still held your hand in his as he searched your face and tried to decide how he would respond. It dawned on your how truly close you were to him now. It made you take a step back though you found it was not really what you wanted to do.
“[Y/N]… I do not believe there is an easy answer to that question.” His voice was low as he released your hand at your retreat.
“Actually Klaus there is. How many times have you come to my house? It’s a number. One number and it is really easy to just say it.” Your arms folded over your chest as you stared him down. Those blue green eyes were still searching you.
“What do you want me to say? It isn’t an easy number because…” The words trailed off as he turned away from you to run his hand through his hair and pace around the fountain.
“Because why Klaus?” The bit of patience you had left was diminishing quickly. That question had him clenching his hands into tight fists at his sides before he finally turned to look at you.
“Because you would run and hide if you truly knew how many times it had been.” The words came out angrily though you were uncertain who he was angry at, you or himself.
“Why? I have done nothing to your family or to you. I am not a threat, Klaus.” Klaus laughed though it felt that there was little humor involved.
“You have no idea what kind of threat you are.” He stalked close until his forehead was pressed against yours. The feel of him trying to control his breathing had your heart pounding in your chest, no doubt heart by every vampire in the Abattoir. “I can’t stay away from you. Whatever spell you have cast upon me, little witch… I cannot resist.”
“I didn’t...” He laughed again pulling back to look you in the eye.
“[Y/N] you do it without trying. Those eyes that can see to the depth of my being… That smile that lights up every trace of my darkened miserable existence. You simply have no idea what you do to me.” The events of the day, fell into place in your mind. The haze of the alcohol was lifting as you gasped, covering your mouth and stepping back.
“You did it. It was you.” Klaus’s eyes showed the hurt at you stepping away but did not completely register what you meant. “My house… you saved my house. You compelled the guy at the bank so he wouldn’t remember.”
The pace of your breathing increased as it felt like a doorway opening letting all the emotions flow through to you. There was so much confusion; you did not know how to process it all. Klaus stood there silently staring as you tried to not to fall apart. He wanted to pull you into his arms, make promises that you were going to be all right. But, he knew it would be too much too soon.
“I will repay you every cent. It will take time but it will happen.” The words sounded almost desperate as they poured from your lips.
A frown flashed over her face quickly as he crossed his arms over his chest and turned away, looking towards the fountain. “You will do no such thing. Go on about your life with one less worry, [Y/N]. I did not tell you because I did not want you to think that you would be required to repay anything. Though I am not surprised you found out. Thought I would have some more time before it happened. Take it as a gift and go back to being who you are. Plant your flowers and live your life.”
A humorless laugh escaped as you limped closer towards the fountain, staring at the light that shined up from the water. “I don’t even know who that is anymore. I am not who I was and I will never be that person again.”
It felt as though Klaus’s heart dropped into his stomach, remembering all the things you had been through in the recent year all because of his kind. The loss of your parents due to the violent nature of vampires was something you may never get over. What right did he have to say any of the things that had foolishly fallen out of his mouth. None. He has no right at all. You were too good and did not deserve the pain the would only follow if anything further were to develop between the two of you.
“Let me take you home so you can rest.” You looked over at Klaus and knew something had changed but simply nodded letting him walk you to your Jeep as you limped slowly beside him. Not another word was passed between the two of you, during the drive back to your house. As you climbed from the vehicle, he handed you the keys. By the time you turned back, to thank him he had disappeared, leaving you to walk alone into the house. The click of the door closing echoed in the front hall of the house before you slide the lock in place.
Your thoughts distracted you as you made your way to your bed, not bothering to change, though you did get out of the shoes that tried to break your ankle earlier. Now you laid in the dark staring up at the ceiling unable to fall asleep due to the events of the day rolling through your mind. Knowing that you did not have to worry or stress about the house did provide some relief and weight off your shoulder. What were you going to do now? And why did it feel like you had lost something vital to your existence?
