Some Photographic Myths
There are plenty of myths surrounding the photography world.
The first myth being that a photographer is their own greatest editor. The authors explain that it's better to receive an outsiders perspective.
The second myth is photographers are good writers and/or designers. Each field is separate from the other, meaning that a person in the art field isn't instantly great at all art forms.
Photographers being good printers is the third myth. Similar to the second myth, printers have mastered printing and spent far more hours learning and shaping their printing skills than photographers have.
The fourth myth explains that professional photographers are not considered to be part of the art field compared to independent photographers. The beginning of photography was created by artists capturing the world and sharing it on large platforms.
People being born with a talent and instinct for photography is the fifth myth. Many people have simply adapted and learned what is pleasing to others. The truth is that successful photographers are dedicated to their work.
Limiting yourself because you think it [capturing a certain image] has been done before is what the sixth myth entails. It's common for artists to get inspiration from other artists so of course "it" has been done before.
Critical theory being useful to photographers is the seventh photographic myth. This can sometimes lead to a suspension in a young artists work.
Photographing in foreign cultures being a no-no is the eighth myth. Being unable to understand and properly express another culture is a concern of other people. However, many photographers capture subjects they are curious about as well as care for.
The final myth is documentary photography is not art. There isn't one single genre of photography that is considered art. All of them apply to the field. As stated earlier, photography would not have advanced as much without the work of documentary photography.
