I just spent 6 hrs reading for my class.
This is the most intense class I have taken so far.
I'm glad its summer so nothing major is going on.
2 chapters 4 articles....one more left to read.
they informed us we need to find a K-3rd grader to work with on this assignment on friday... it's due next thursday
not sure why they think everyone has a student hanging around in the summer specifically a K-3 student
luckily I keep in touch with some of my past preschool students and two have volunteered to help. I set up a time to meet at the library.
we have to do a reading assessment
so on top of finding a student it needs to be someone comfortable enough to read and share thoughts with us!
mt youngest is going to do a test run with me tomorrow...mine are 8th and 12th grade. lol but the 8th grader has said he would be willing to assist my trial run.
I still feel they should have told us day one that for week 2 we would need to work with a student
“Can we all just Get Along?”
Title: Get Along
Author: Guy Sebastian
Text Type: Song
We live in a day and time where it is very common for people to be quick to hate and put down people’s beliefs and practices. This song speaks against prejudices and religious intolerance. The chorus sings: “Dear God, dear soul, dear Mary, Mohammed. Can we all just get along?’, through this chorus Guy is trying to make a point that it doesn’t matter who we serve, we should be respectful of each others religions. ‘Get Along’ by Guy Sebastian raises a simple yet challenging question, why can’t we all just get along?. I strongly disagree with Guy Sebastian suggesting that we could possibly all agree and be at peace because it’s the same things we are striving and believing for. The metaphor “Different paths up the same mountain” could be used to illustrate this. I believe this is illogical because Atheists believe in no gods, Christians believe in one true God, and Hindu’s believe there are many Gods. It is very much possible that none of these beliefs are true, but they certainly can’t all be true.
Although I think this, I still like the overall message this song has, and how it is very relevant to the generation i am in right now, it is even more so relevant as i am a teenager. This song is a reminder to me to be a kind, loving and and to be respectful to other people's culture and religion and i think it should be something everyone excercises on a daily basis. The idea of everyone getting along is very desirable to all of us, however as Guy implements when he sings “Maybe if we’d work together, we’d already have a heaven here on earth.”, It would be very hard for everyone to get along as it is our very nature to act selfishly and to make decisions that are only good for ourselves and that only benefit ourselves. This stops us from being open minded to the idea of working with people different to us. This song made me wonder, besides from religion and personal beliefs, why is it that we all as a people are not able to come together as one?. There isn’t that many obstacles stopping us from becoming one massive unstoppable team.
The time this song was released, in November of 2012, there was a lot of violent and horrific events happening. The period in which this song was released there had been many suicide bombings and religious attacks happening, which links back to the meaning of this song which is religious intolerance; which also made this song a lot more significant and important in that time. This song was relevant in 2012 and is still relevant today. Our world is still having to deal with conflicts caused by religion. In this song Guy Sebastian uses imagery as a technique to make us long for what it is he is singing about, which is worldwide peace.
I would recommend this to year 12 students because i think they would find this song very interesting and meaningful as it isn’t a generic type song, it is complex and has depth. This text would be a valuable choice for a year 12 book club because it challenges readers to think about what goes on in the world. It shows the reader how strong our communities could be if we let go of our pride and differences, and come together as one. It is a very deep song with many inspirational and relevant messages that can be found if this text is properly studied and analysed.

Monster Spelling Phonics Assessment
Every year, after the DRAs have concluded, the Literacy teachers assess students’ phonemic and spelling rules awareness. At our school, we use an assessment we call Monster Spelling. It’s a list of 10 words read by the teacher to the student, based on a child’s DRA level, that allows teachers to see how well students know and write basic alphabet sounds or all the way through vowel patterns, prefixes, and suffixes. Depending on a child’s reading ability, s/he is read this list of words to sound out independently the best s/he can. After the child is finished with the assessment, s/he can draw a sketch of any kind of monster on the back of the paper…a silly, friendly, furry, scary, cookie, or whatever monster is preferred by the child! It’s a quick, painless, and fun way to evaluate how much or how little sound work a child will need at the beginning of a school year to prepare him or her for reading.
Beginning of the year 'Reading Check-ups'
At the beginning of each school year, we as teachers need to assess the prior knowledge of our students. Specifically related to literacy, many teachers use the DRA or Diagnostic Reading Assessment. This tool is a great way to quickly gather a lot of information on new and experienced readers. It involves the students reading a sampling of short books, and asking them a series of predicting, retelling, strategizing, and connecting questions. First time DRA-takers tend to be a little nervous, but by the next time they take the assessment, they can't wait for the one-on-one reading time with the teacher. They tend to love showing off what they know and are able to do. DRAs are similar to running records, but teachers are able to learn a bit more about the readers with the DRA.
The DRA results are then reported to parents in the fall and are used to group students by instructional comfort level. We read books together twice a week that aren't too easy or too hard but just right...just like Goldilocks!
