Chapter 9
Reading Log 9 - Seizing the Light by Robert Hirsch
Last chapter, I read about the works of Muybridge and Marey and their contrasting works of photographically capturing human and animal movements. Chapter 8 also covered the introduction of color to photography. We have Levi L. Hill for discovering this, though it was accidentally. This theory of color photographs was later on tested by James Clerk Maxwell and Thomas Sutton, a photographer and scientist dynamic duo to the rescue! (Muybridge and Marey could have been so great together.)
Chapter 9 is all about the evolution of Pictorialism, Symbolism, and photography clubs.
Terms to remember:
Symbolism: a revolt against realism and its minute descriptions of an objective. It’s the expression of the shifting, subtle state of the human psyche by using symbols and metaphors.
-Pictorialism, according to Peter Henry Emerson, is the founded premise that camera images could engage the senses and emotions in a naturalistic manner.
-Naturalism: all phenomena through natural forces rather than the supernatural and looks for causes instead of reason [p. 192]
- The Secession Movement: the reflection of disenchantment of younger artists with practices and exhibition policies of established Western art societies.
- Halation: the luminous halo, with a diffused outer edge, that occurs when an exposure is made into a bright source of light, also known as backlighting.
Some of the more intriguing parts about this chapter are the photography clubs. I never knew it was even a thing back in the late 1800s. To be exact, there were about ten clubs in the U.S. by 1895, there were over 150 groups. It must have been quite exclusive since the text mentions that the groups were largely populated by white upper-middle class amateur photographers. Women also didn’t exactly have a place in these groups either, some would say that a woman’s place was at home, which lead to women challenging these unequal opportunities inside the photography realm. The unequal treatment may even be present in today’s society, sadly. Although we have come a long way, in my opinion there is still unfairness and unequal treatment among minority groups and I’m only talking about artistic world. I have personal experience with this while I have worked.
Getting back to the photography clubs and the unfair treatment of women in these clubs, there was one individual who took it upon herself to make a statement. Catherine Weed Barnes wrote an article, “Why Ladies Should be Admitted to Membership in Photographic Societies.” This is an article that I wish to find and read, just to have a glimpse of Catherine’s point of view and she stance on this issue. I think it’s an important part of this chapter to be placed in this shoes of someone who felt poorly treated due to their gender and how she treated the problem at hand.
Moby Dick
Part II #1
Character Report
Ishmael: the narrator of the story, Ishmael is the adventurer who happen to be one of the crew of Captain Ahab’s ship Pequod. He can be anyman or he can be called everyman. Doctor, Nurse, journalist, adventurer, a father, and etc. he has this tiny bit of info about whaling. This man here is the only one who survived the fall of Pequod because of the death of Captain Ahab, which is our protagonist or hero in the story has his mates and crew, first is Starbuck, the Chiefmate of the Pequod. He is a decent and honorable man. We can see that a God-fearing man. He is a father also and he’s wife is waiting for him to come home. He has only one fear and that is he will never see his family again because of Captain Ahab selfish desires. Together with starbuck is Stubb is far different from Starbuck, this guy here is the easy going and he is a person who laughs at all things including death. He is not afraid of death but he loves the danger that he face. This two mates here are under the leadership of Captain Ahab, he is a fine man on his fifties and tall man. He has a scar on his face because its either birthmark or because of an adventures. Captain ahab was about to have an early mourning because of Quequeeg’s request to put him in a coffin. Quequeeg is Ishmael’s friend while still on the Nantucket. Quequeeg is one of the finest harpooners in the Pequod. The trip was for sperm whale hunting only to find out that along the way its just the search for Moby Dick, the greatest white sperm whale on sea. The enormous beast as what Captain Ahab said as he was describing the whale. The reason also why Captain Ahab loses his leg.
MOBY DICK by HERMAN MELVILLE
Moby Dick is a novel written by Herman Melville, it’s about a captain and a white sperm whale. Captain Ahab tries to catch the gigantic sperm whale for the reason that he lose his right leg because of Mody Dick. In the story it’s not clear how Captain Ahab lost it but because of that tragic experience in his life it gives him bitterness, a vengeful heart and a selfishness. Knowing that he is the captain of the ship(Pequod) it’s hard for a leader to govern his people if he/she has the attitude just like what Captain Ahab had. As I reflect to this, I totally agree to one of John Maxwell quotes “"Everything rises and falls on leadership," if you as a leader fails to act according to your position you and you’re team will fall. But who can blame Captain Ahab about his attitude towards moby dick? Moby Dick is the reason for such shame that Captain Ahab had. A lot of people act like this, they think that after giving revenge towards something they will be happy.
I haven’t experience being on a ship and chase a whale, but what I’m about to share is an experience my father faced when he was in the middle of the sea. So, my father is a fisherman and their job is to collect fishes and deliver it from PNG(Papua New Guine) to RD Fishing. Whenever he arrives and dine with us he never fail to share his experience while being with us. He shared that he caught a big fish(I forgot the name) but, also the amazing thing is along with their fishing, they caught a shark in the big net and so they ate it and he told us its very delicious. What I’m going to share to you is my experienced when it comes to leadership, We had this team leader, it’s safe to keep her name in secret. So we had this team leader and she is very smart yet very arrogant and proud. Whenever our groupmates suggest something her way of declining it is through saying that “its not a good” and so my classmate doesn’t bother to give another suggestion. I can say that its very hard if you have a leader who is so full of herself and thinks that he can do it alone.
I wonder what’s the reaction of Captain Ahab’s family and crew towards his meanness and selfishness? I think they’re all complaining and just enduring the attitude of Captain Ahab since he is the captain and the leader of the ship. They don’t have any rights to disobey since he’s the leader and they are all in need. I’m also assuming that every night when Captain Ahab thinks and move on his cabin his foot will make a noise to the crew under his cabin. But they have to endure and just be quiet so that they will be no conflict.
I think if Captain Ahab is not bitter, selfish and vengeful the journey of being a captain of whaling ship will just be good and better. They will have a good and fine trip. If he just let go of the accident then maybe Captain Ahab would have a good communication with his family and people (crew). Being vengeful will not help you in your journey it will just lead you to distraction.
Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children
Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children My favorite part in the story is the last part where Jacob went into the ship and meet Emma again after returning to the present world. Jacob with the other peculiar children are back together on a journey they don’t know. So my own prediction since its stops on the ship. They will sail along a vast ocean then while on the ship all of them will have a mission to kill all the hollows for the freedom of all peculiar people. After a long time, Miss Peregrine got back his wings and she’s able to shape-shift. After that they found an island and killed all the hollows there. After a great battle against the hollows, that island has a beautiful church then both couple, Jacob and Emma and Enoch and Olive decided to get married and raise up a children with peculiar ability. With such a long time after 5 years, Jacob and Emma have their own daughter named Lily, peculiarity is to produce the four season(winter, rain, sunny and cloudy/windy) and Enoch and Olive have their own son named, Winston, peculiarity is great mind for a inventions and can foresee the future. The other peculiar continue the mission with Lily and Winston. And soon after they stay on an island where they build a training camp for peculiar children that needs to improve and learn how to use their peculiarity.
LOVE, ROSIE
LOVE ROSIE
To the most inconsiderate asshole of a friend, I’m writing you this letter because I know that if I say what I have to say to your face I will probably punch you. I don’t know you anymore. I don’t see you anymore. All I get is a quick text or a rushed e-mail from you every few days. I know you are busy and I know you have Bethany, but hello? I’m supposed to be your best friend.
You have no idea what this summer has been like. Ever since we were kids we pushed away every single person that could possibly have been our friend. We blocked people until there was only me and you. You probably haven’t noticed, because you have never been in the position I am in now. You have always had someone. You always had me. I always had you. Now you have Bethany and I have no one. Now I feel like those other people that used to try to become our friend, that tried to push their way into our circle but were met by turned backs. I know you’re probably not doing it deliberately just as we never did it deliberately. It’s not that we didn’t want anyone else, it’s just that we didn’t need them. Sadly now it looks like you don’t need me anymore. Anyway I’m not moaning on about how much I hate her, I’m just trying to tell you that I miss you. And that well . . . I’m lonely.
This excerpt from “Love, Rosie” is a letter from Rosie to Alex. Rosie is speaking her heart towards her situation to Alex. That as we can see on every lines, there’s jealousy on Rosie. Jealousy not on the time that Alex spend on Bethany, but the position that supposed to be Rosie’s position. The next lines that prove of Rosie’s sad heart is this “You have always had someone. You always had me. I always had you. Now you have Bethany and I have no one.” That lines that expressing her need for Alex.
