General Jean “Mirage” could be heard through the bellowing smoke yelling at the top of his lungs with every last bit of blind confidence he could muster, even though a piece of the stairway railing could be seen protruding from his gut. “We’re surrounded! Spread out! Bury deep and don’t drop your grenade pins ladies! Hold this room at all costs! The asset will not be lost. Not today. Not EVER!”. Flashes of light flood the hallway as a melody of shots are fired while muffled radio chatter begins to bleed through the breached windows and barricaded door frames.
Something we can all agree on, is that the Rainbow Six Series, or more to the point, any Tom Clancy title, is generally very particular about its tactical accuracy and ability to make you feel like you are genuinely in the heat of battle. Siege is in no way an exception, as this title not only delivers what can be expected from a tactical shooter, but goes over and beyond this by lacing the experience with the truly primal fear of death. Siege personifies methodical military planning and surgical strike success and manifests it in your subconscious through the reality of how fragile you “actually” are and how every simple action you take on the battlefield has, or could have a galactic host of consequences leading to either your whole team being wiped out or a nail biting victory.
Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six: Siege has no solo campaign, but is completely dependent on it’s online multiplayer scenario’s to set it apart when comparing it to the current plethora of mainstream multiplayer shooter games. This was something that almost very nearly sullied the brand’s good reputation, as connectivity issues were “a-plenty” from the get-go. Having taken part in the exclusive Closed Beta, the Open Beta and now the Alpha, combatants (me included) would be faced with dropped server connections or endless launch loops prior to insertion. With each progression stage of the title however, the connectivity bugs were noticeably being stomped on, which gave me hope, and aided in me giving the title “the benefit of the doubt” resulting in a non-misplaced sense of hope.
In Siege, you are either part of a terrorist cell hauled up in a fortified structure or part of the recently re-activated elite Rainbow Six team of anti-terrorists that are about to employ specialized weapon and gear load-outs to breach the terrorist stronghold. It may sound like a typically predictable title, but it is far from. Siege’s strength lies in each specialist’ (called Operators) unique offensive or defensive ability to contribute to your team’s strength. You only have one life. No respawn. No health packs. Every decision you make will impact the outcome of the match. Teamwork is essential, without it, pack up, shut down, go play Minecraft, as each bullet that reduces either your armour or that of a team member, feels like the aftershock of a seismic event, forcing you to think ahead, strategically plan your reloads, become possessive over your grenades or breach charges and check your corners like a paranoid mental patient.
Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six: Siege is a pure gem. A class on it’s own and worth every second spent developing it and “immersevely” playing it. This review was left so long to specifically give Ubisoft some time to rectify the connectivity issues. They have, and now, you can as an operator enjoy a lot more uninterrupted strategic sessions and a lot less server drops or lag spikes with each passing week, with the added benefit of densely populated servers and truly competitive multiplayer scenarios. At ease soldier.
