Directed by Erik Matti, Kuwaresma surely did not disappoint. It's more than a horror film and really comes close to a psychological thriller. Matti's brand of horror really shows in Kuwaresma, from his usage of noise and chatter to the unexpected jumpscares, much like in Seklusyon. The jumpscares of Mikhail Red's Eerie was heavily supported by smart usage of light and silence. Kuwaresma showcases horror regardless of light or darkness. It drowns you so much in noise and chatter that the jumpscares catch you off-guard. Storytelling-wise, it was quite intricate. All the elements and details spread throughout the film make you appreciate how everything unravels in the end because it's like one big treasure hunt. It was quick to spot that it's about possession and exorcism, but it was more than that. Similar to Seklusyon, Kuwaresma introduced subplots that ultimately broke down character developments; that no one was purely good. This is the first time I've seen @reallysharoncuneta act so bare with so much depth and less drama unlike her usual roles. But the true winner here is @johnarcilla. He truly is a man of many talents and yet again, he proves that he is capable of taking on any kind of genre, even horror. @_kentgonzales should also be praised since he did so much better than Ronnie Alonte in Seklusyon. It's sad to see the Philippines churning out so-called horror films headlined by young actors because they always fall short when it comes to story, CGI, and execution. Maybe because the priority is more on the stars than the actual film? Like I said, sad. But sometimes, we get gems like Eerie and Bliss that have been well-received internationally, which we should patronize more. Sure they were headlined by the likes of Charo Santos-Concio, Bea Alonzo and Iza Calzado but that only proves that we ARE capable of quality horror films or any kind of film in general, and Kuwaresma adds to that list. This film needs to be supported more especially now that it's up against Endgame, John Wick and Detective Pikachu in theaters. Do yourself a favor and watch it.
