Personally I'm a fan of the theory that Mike pushes himself too hard in track/at school and ends up collapsing or needing to be hospitalized; a way to parallel Lucy's attempt without attempting himself, especially since he has a problem with being overly passive (until he isn't)
ooooooh! very intrigued by this... especially when you pair it with the fact that he's been avoiding eating. he's currently trying to do only sneaky forms of self-harm, so i could absolutely see him going "i don't want to take care of myself..... oh shit i didn't mean for you guys to notice"
