I like to make jokes sometimes that when Scottish nobles were renovating their houses during the Renaissance they blew the entire budget on the painted ceilings but I was doing some light research on such ceilings for a different reason and:

#art#interior design#Scottish history#I apologise for getting very enthusiastic about something very niche but honestly WHAT#That's so weird why did our ancestors decide to attack the ceilings instead of the walls?? Or maybe it's actually about survival?#And I need to find out more about what they mean by 'distinctive national style' because I really thought there would be#more Renaissance painted ceilings in England and really everywhere? I just thought it was something everyone did?#Maybe there are painted ceilings from the sixteenth century in England but they're a different style?#I'm so confused but also INTRIGUED#Although looking at my own room (built in the Victorian era not the Renaissance) it has a very high ceiling#and if I was going to paint anything in here it would be the ceiling or the very tops of the walls and not the bottom of the wals#So you had something to look at rather than just a big empty space#ANYWAY though#Although I will stand by my frequent arguments that yes! sixteenth century Scotland had culture and art and style like any other country!#I will admit I'm actually perpetually surprised every time i find something like this out#Because we really have had it drilled into us that Scotland never had any kind of High Culture whatsoever#or if it did then it just came secondhand from England#So this is doubly cool#Although I would feel pretty sad personally if I were an inhabitant of sixteenth century England and had no painted ceiling#Really missing out
