With the death of the Crown Prince of the Seven Kingdoms, Antony and Alycia Vitello have vowed that they shall not rest until they find the culprits. They see their enemies everywhere – even among their oldest friends. They plan to question all, throwing those in the cells of the deepest dungeons for the night if they feel they do not gain a satisfactory answer. They intend to drag all those to trial who may hold a connection to the monster, and if a swift justice cannot be doled out there, they intend to do it themselves.
While Leanne has shown no signs of disloyalty and bears no suspicions for the crimes committed, she is still being brought forward to serve as a witness to the potential criminals. She has a choice: to tell the truth and risk the wrath of the Mad King or tell him precisely what it is he longs to hear and condemn innocents to an unknown fate.
“The truth is rarely pure and never simple.”
Leanne’s handmaiden rushed to her side, speaking too quickly for her to comprehend any of the words. Her brows furrowed as she listened more carefully, and she made out two details: the crown prince was dead and her nephew had lost his mind. Making more enemies than his father ever had…
Zion had never crossed her, although he adored her too much to do so in the first place. He knew by the way she rode on horseback towards Highcrest, while the twins still in slept in her womb, and the way she fiercely guarded every single lock of golden hair upon their heads– that she was a force to be reckoned with. The young king knew of no such tales, and perhaps this was why he had thrown Asa into a FILTHY prisoner’s cell…
Her thoughts quickly went to POISON and the pleasure of watching her precious nephew choke on the putrid remnants of the pheasant he had last. Ha! It was much easier to wage war. The Pemberleys certainly had enough gold and men. Even if her sister would be in danger, Leanne would rather attend the funeral of her sister than of her children. Could she also really be blamed to remain indifferent to the death of the woman who gave birth to the monstrosity that now occupied the THRONE?
A single tear escaped the rim of her eyes, and she quickly wiped it away, along with the murderous thoughts that filled her mind.
Leanne’s breaths were eerily even, and she shushed the frantic girl and told her to make them both some tea. Her handmaiden was better occupied with tea than dressing her today. Leanne unhurriedly slipped into her dress, and she brushed off her skirts of emerald green && gold as she stood. She tucked stray strands of her dark hair behind her ears.
She nodded for her guard to open the door, and once it was ajar, another guard stood in front of her. He handed her a note from the Mad King himself. She was to CODEMN both the innocent and the guilty to their deaths to please his highness.
Leanne could not refuse him now, not with Asa caged like a savage animal. Her jaw clenched and her breath made an undetectable flutter as she thought of her son. She smiled wide enough for her cheeks to begin to tremble while she thanked the man. She excused herself and headed towards the dungeons. Her head was still high and a sea of green && gold silk trailed behind her, as she strode gracefully through the corridors.
She would show no weakness.
She would not give anybody the satisfaction of watching her break.
