InDesign Recap Session...
Today I went to the InDesign session and it was sooo helpful, I've never really been very confident using InDesign and tend to aviod using it where I can, but obviously there are times when it is the best program to use to ensure that things are done effectively like magazine and article layouts. Here are my photos from the session and what I learnt...
Facing pages are for use on magazines and other double page spread layouts.
The master text frame allows you to control all pages with what ever is on the master page appearing on all pages of the document like page numbers. Also you can add multiple master frames if you wanted even more control by having certain things only appearing on certain pages. By double clicking on the A master on the right hand side shows the master page and its contents.
Gutter - The space between the columns and rows
Bleed - Full colour images to the edge for professional printing set the bleed to ensure that all of the image is shown.
Slug - Is the notes for the printer where you can specify certain requirements.
Margins - Can be set the same but also edited seperately.
Important tip - InDesign works at a Low Res to ensure that the program doesn't crash so images may appear pixelated to see how the image will actually work go to View > Display Performances > High Quality Display.
Another good tip - Keep all parts that you are using in the document organised in one folder as everything is linked and if one thing is moved it will become lost in the document.
Type Tool - With InDesign you have to draw a text box to enter type into, also InDesign has the option to fill a text box with Placeholder text handy for magazine page mock ups.
Make sure that when you are typing in articles that the Hyphen option is unticked.
CMD + A - Highlights everything
A little plues sign inside a box means that there is more text that cannot be seen outside the box.
CMD + B - Text Frame Options > Tick Preview > Change Columns
W - Print View to see what the printed version would look like without guides etc.
Using columns and images - Having a go at a basic layout.
