Vitiligo is a common autoimmune disorder that affects the skin . . 🔬Skin Science: Vitiligo affects 1-3% of the population. Essentially your immune system attacks the pigment cells called melanocytes. Some pigment cells hide in the hair follicles (hence why hair can be pigmented in some cases). This is an important positive prognostic factor . . 🙄👉Prognostic factors: This will be determined by your treating dermatologist. Vitiligo area, age, progression, as well as findings such as follicular pigmentation all counts towards the algorithm . . 👍🏻💯Treatment options: Include camouflage with makeup & cosmetics- #dermablend is one company. Repigmentation can be achieved in most patients, depending on prognostic factors (based upon stats). Topicals include CS, tacrolimus & other calcineurin inhibitors, vitamin D analogues, #psoralens (topically), in addition to light. Light wavelengths include nUVB at 311 nm, UVB, UVA & visible. nUVB is the safest. #excimer lasers can help, as can newer IPL devices in the 308-312 nm wavelengths . . 💉🔪Surgical options include melanocyte harvesting including #ReCell spray on skin & split grafts. These are last line resorts for small areas in stable vitiligo. I have performed over a dozen ReCell treatments, my success rate is less than 20%. Your #dermatologist may a higher success rate . . 💡Action: In Oz, nUVB is through #medicare. It typically takes between 40-80 sessions over 4-8 months to obtain pigmentation . . 😎Dr Davin Lim Dermatologist Brisbane @drdavinlim .🇦🇺 #vitilgotreatment #vitiligocure #treatingvitiligo #vitiligosupport #dermatologistbrisbane (at Brisbane, Queensland, Australia) https://www.instagram.com/p/CE7kKGrjYcG/?igshid=6mrwuk81b6nz
