Sand sculptures
25.04.2017 When Writerscreed set a ‘Recipe for Writing’ as their weekly writing prompt, I thought of this poem. What cannot be shared, has to be written, for some of us! And so here it is!
And sometimes
All you need to do is
Share
The one thing
That matters
At the time
When it matters most
With someone
Who cares.
:|:
And when you do
Share it
It becomes so much lighter
When a dear one
Lifts the other end of your coffin
And evens the load
And so
Before you know it
You’re ready to bury it
:|:
And the moment you place it upon the table
For an Other’s gaze to dissect it
You externalise it
And let another perspective
Crumble it
To bits and pieces
In a way
That you would never have been able to do it
Yourself
:|:
And it becomes so much easier
To deal with it
And let pieces of it
Slip
Out of your heart
And through your fingers
Like sand at the beach
That just needs a shower
To wash it down the drain
:|:
But
When
There’s
No
One
To
Share
It
With
:|:
All your energy is spent
In convincing yourself
That because it does not exist
Outside you
It is not real
Or visible to anyone
And because no one can see it
It does not exist
Outside you
:|:
And so
When the perspective that is needed to help you
Snap out of it
And bury it
Goes missing
And there’s no way you can quite break it into the bits and pieces
That can then easily be allowed to
Slip away
Like sand
You stop trying
:|:
And instead
Carve
Out of the bits and pieces that you can’t quite break
Out of what doesn’t exist outside you
And what is not real or visible to others
A story
A verse
A sand sculpture
:|:
And you breathe a sigh of relief
Because you no longer
Have to justify its existence
To yourself
And others
For you have immortalised it
In a work of (he)art
That is visible and real
And beautiful and true.
