Bricks of yore find a new home -

The best extensions work with the good features you already have, building on them to create something better. We keep saying it because it is so true: new blending with old; a seamless addition that looks like it was always there.

To do that with this addition we needed Tamworth Red bricks, but because these are no longer made we sourced them from an old unwanted tobacco barn which we carefully demolished to reclaim the bricks; with this project specifically in mind. (You can check out how we did this here).

When it came time to lay the bricks, we also incorporated a less usual bricklaying pattern to match the new bricks with the style that is formed when they laid the original double-brick walls.

There was a lot of work involved recovering these bricks, but we think it was worth it!

If the end look of your extension is important to you, then make sure you choose a builder that will take the time and care needed to give you the outcome you want.

And then there were none -

Down down - the old tobacco barn has come down, and its Tamworth Red bricks have been reclaimed. It was a dusty job but we have managed to maintain the face grade quality of most of these bricks by hand cleaning them as they came down. Some of these will be used in an extension to an older building we are about to renovate in town, so that the new bricks will match as closely as possible to the original bricks (which can’t be bought anymore).

The best extensions are always those which mesh the old and new together seamlessly - in both design and materials - so that it’s hard to tell where the old finishes and the new begins. It should be as though the building has always been that way. So part of our commitment to quality building for our clients involves sourcing materials and then using techniques to ensure this seamless construction can happen.

We still have some of these leftover bricks for sale - all cleaned and ready to use. There are around 7000 face grade bricks still available, and possibly still a few second grades. These bricks are hard to come by and aren’t the sort of thing you can just go and buy whenever you decide you want or need some.
