“Numbuh Vine?! Numbuh Vine! Hello?! Do you read me?! Are you alright?!”
“We lost the signal!”
“Ah crud, hang on!” Wally said, turning the dial and pushing buttons on the panel in front of him. Kuki put her hands together worriedly.
“I dunno, Numbuh 4. I’m starting to think that maybe that video wasn’t an April Fool’s joke from Numbuh 1 after all…” “Ah, what’re ya, crazy?! What else could it be?!” Wally asked, sticking his tongue out and pushing the lever in concentration of finding the right frequency.
“But Lizzie…er..Numbuh Vine sounded pretty worried! She told us to evacuate everyone on the planet!”
“That’s cruddy impossible! Evacuate everyone on earth, you gotta be kiddin’ me! And where are we gonna take’m, Pluto? It’s too hot there!” Kuki rolled her eyes at this; not even bothering to correct Wally on the fact that Pluto was cold. He continued,
“Look, it has to be a joke! It’s ridiculous otherwise!” Wally said, fiercely pushing a button on the panel.
“Crud! Looks like it’s busted. We’ll have to have Numbuh Two fix it when he gets back,” Wally said, scratching his head.
“Ugh, you didn’t even try this one!” Kuki cried, pushing a button on the far right.
“Kuki, NO!!!”
“Oh red and orange, and pink and blue! Rainbow Monkeys, Rainbow Monkeys, We Love You!” Wally gave the girl a hard glare and she just beamed from ear to ear. He narrowed his eyes,
“You did that on cruddy purpose, didn’t ya?” he asked. She giggled and he bowed his head in exasperation. Suddenly, he felt light touch on his shoulder. Looking up, he saw Kuki staring at him with small wrinkles between her brows and a lips pulled in tight line, despite the Rainbow Monkey theme song blaring around them.
“But really Wally, I’m serious. This…It sounded really bad.” His eyes grew wide, then he looked down to the side in deep thought before glancing up at the dancing Rainbow Monkeys on the screen. ……in retrospect…all of this was a bit…strange. He sighed,
“Alright. If we’re gonna check this out, we’ll need some help, then. Someone we can trust…” he said.
------
“No, no, NO! Anywhere but HERE!”
“But why not?! Numbuh 417’s really nice!”
“HEL-LO?! ONE, she’s the craziest crazy fangirl evah!! And two, she’s a CRUDDY TEENAGER!”
“Oh pooh! She like JUST turned 13, and she’s not even that bad! And besides, she was only a hyper fangirl around you because you’re sooo cute and adorable!” Kuki said. Wally felt himself flush from head to toe.
“I-I am not!!!”
“You are! You’re like a cuddly Rainbow Monkey!” she said, picking him up and hugging him tightly. Wally felt butterflies in his stomach while also gasping out for air at how tightly Kuki was squeezing him. He couldn’t handle this!
“AH! L-lemme go! Kuki!” he cried. But Kuki just giggled and cuddled him more, rubbing her face against his hair.
“Ooh! You fit so snuggly in my arms, Wally!” she laughed. He cried out in frustration and flailed his arms about trying to get away. It was then that the door opened, and a dark skinned girl in a green tank top with camouflaged shorts and a backwards hat stood at the door. She raised an eyebrow.
“Um….can I help you?” she asked. Wally and Kuki froze; Wally stiffened, wondering if she’d go into the crazy-fangirl mode that she used to launch into every time she saw him. Kuki, for her part, dropped Wally on the ground and threw her hands up in the air.
“Hiya, Numbuh 417! It’s Numbuhs 3 and 4 from Sector V! Do you remember us?” she asked, brightly. The girl narrowed her eyes, folded her arms and leaned against her doorway. There was a pause as she looked the two of them up and down.
“….oh yeah, you’re the two kids who’re always hanging out with my cousin. …Um…where is Abby, anyway?” she asked, looking around. Wally and Kuki glanced at each other. Abby was handling business on KND Moonbase. The leaduhs and KND scientists were still trying to figure out where the video of Nigel and those aliens had come from and who leaked it; particularly since it sounded like Numbuh 5’s voice as at the end of the footage.
When Numbuh Vine first contacted the treehouse several weeks ago, Wally and Kuki had been the only ones there to answer. She told them about the video and that they had to keep where it came from a secret, but to release it when the time was right. She didn’t give them much for more context to the video other than they couldn’t tell anyone else about it. As such, they even kept it a secret from Numbuh 5. But judging from their most recent transmission from Numbuh Vine just a while ago, it seemed as though them releasing the video as early as they did was going to have serious repercussions.
They couldn’t tell Abby—their former second-in-command and now new leader—that they’d kept this from her. They’d be seriously reprimanded.
“Eh…look, can we come in?” Wally asked, rubbing his back side as he stood up from the fall. There was another pause before the girl rolled her eyes and made room for them to enter her house.
“Alright, but make it quick,” she said. Wally and Kuki entered the house and Numbuh 417, aka Brittany, closed the door behind them. She folded her arms,
“Now, what’s this all about?” she asked. Kuki bit her bottom lip and rubbed her hands together as she glanced at Wally; she was suddenly a bit nervous. He put his hands in his pockets and shrugged. They hadn’t really thought about what they’d say when they got there. Brittany frowned,
“Look, if you guys have nothing to say can you leave? I’m kinda marathoning Degrassi right now,” she said. Wally threw his hands up and shook his head.
“Oh, I knew this was a dumb idea! C’mon, Numbuh 3!” he said, preparing to storm out; Kuki grabbed his arm. He glanced at her as she gave him her best set of puppy-dog eyes. He sighed.
“Kuki…”
“Just ask her!”
“Ask me what?!” the teen exclaimed. Wally looked up at her.
“Look. Eh…N-Numbuh 417…” “Why do you keep calling me that? It’s Brittany, okay?” he cringed a bit at that. She certainly seemed snippier than she used to be before her birthday. He actually kind of missed her clingier side. The Aussie rubbed the back of his neck,
“Er…r-right…Brittany. Um..do you…know anything about that weird video that’s kinda gone viral….ish?” he asked. The girl raised an eyebrow.
“What video?”
“The one with the boy who sticks his boogies in a machine…” Kuki said pointing to her own nose for effect. The teen narrowed her eyes and turned her head skeptically.
“Yeeessss??? It’s…pretty popular right now…? But the special effects look pretty weak…” she said slowly. “Why, what about it?” she asked. Wally and Kuki looked at each other.
“We….may have had something to do with it,” they said. A long pause.
“You guys are telling me this, why?”
“Because it’s gotten outta control and we don’t know what to do!” Kuki said, walking up to her.
“You may not remember us, but you always used to help us out when we needed it! We can’t tell Numbuh 5…er…Abby what’s going on, and Hoagie’s away on a trip. If we tell anyone else we could get in big trouble! We think something bad is going to happen and we don’t know what to do!” Kuki said. Wally tensed up…Kuki didn’t have to make them sound THAT desperate.
“Well what do you want me to do?”
“Well, we’re preeetty sure the video didn’t have special effects in it, anyway…hehe,” Wally laughed nervously. The teen stood a bit straighter.
“Wait a sec… Y-you guys aren’t saying that whole alien mumbo-jumbo is real, are you?!” she asked. Kuki shrank back at this and Wally glanced off to the side.
“Well…define… ‘real’ exactly...heh…” Kuki muttered. The teen blanched.
“Numbuh 3! Numbuh 4! What did you guys do?!” she cried. The two kids glanced up. Kuki pointed to her,
“W-wait a min…Hey! You DO remember us after all!”
“And you two have made some dumb mistakes in the past but this takes the cake! What’s going on?!” she asked, clenching her fists at her side and advancing on the kids. Kuki and Wally drew closer together and hugged each other.
“For crying out loud, you guys! The Kids Next Door is running around like chickens with their heads cut off and the Teens are trying to do what they can to help them without disturbing the balance between the two and freaking out!” she cried. The two kids stared at her in awe.
“W-wait…what do you mean the teens are…?” Wally started, when he was cut off.
“Dammit! This….whatever enemy this is…it’s bigger than some stupid little feud between age groups on earth! Did you think we were just gonna sit by and not do anything?! Most of us thought it was a prank, but you’re sitting here telling me it’s not?!” The girl asked. Wally opened his mouth, about to point out the fact that the he’d heard the two girls he thought he knew well curse around him in less than two hours but—
“Put… your hand… down Numbuh 4!” Brittany cried. Wally closed his mouth and folded his arms in a huff. The teen took a deep breath and sighed.
“Now, I’m going to ask this again: What did you guys do?”
-----
And so, they explained everything. They explained how they had been contacted by Numbuh Vine weeks ago; how they had watched the video and at first thought it was weird…but then figured it had to be an April Fool’s joke because hey, Nigel would NEVER EVER betray Earth…EVAH! They explained how they thought the video was funny enough as a prank to release it early—Numbuh Vine had actually told them to wait until the countdown ended (but hey, they didn’t even know what the counter was counting down TO. “We can’t read Canadian!” Wally had stressed. So releasing it whenever wouldn’t matter, right)? They explained how Numbuh Vine had contacted them recently, ticked off that they hadn’t waited until March 31st at midnight to release the video…and they didn’t know why.
“What difference does it make when it was released? The video is the same either way!” Wally folded his arms. “I still don’t think it’s a big deal!”
“But Lizzie…er…Numbuh Vine seemed really upset,” Kuki said.
“And she wanted us to evacuate everyone?” Brittany asked. The two kids nodded.
“On the entire planet?” another nod.
“But she didn’t say by when?” a shake in the negative.
“It seemed like she was saying that something…or someone was coming soon though…” Kuki said, holding onto Wally’s arm. Numbuh 417 had been standing this whole time as Kuki and Wally sat on her living room sofa. She sat back in her arm chair, putting a hand to her head in deep thought.
“Timing. It seems to be all about timing but….this doesn’t make any sense…” she said.
“What do you mean?” Wally asked.
“Well, first of all…Nigel looked older in the video; didn’t you guys notice?” she asked. Wally and Kuki stiffened. They had noticed…but they’d brushed it aside. If it was a prank, it was probably just good make-up or something.
“If he’s older…but Lizzie still looked the same when she contacted you…and if it’s authentic….WHEN was that video shot? And when was it sent to us? I know time is relative—particularly if you consider lightyears…but still. And if this IS time-sensitive, exactly how long do we have to evacuate everyone? When is this…thing…whatever it was that…Numbuh Vine—er—Lizzie? Was worried about. When is it supposed to happen? There’s too many questions…” she said, putting a finger to her chin.
“Even more so…why was Lizzie upset about you releasing the video at all? What was the difference between when it was released, verses releasing it on the eve of April 1st? It has to be timing. If she wanted you to wait to release the video…something had to be happening on her end. She had to feel that releasing it too early was more dangerous than too late…”
“It did look like she was under attack when the transmission with us was cut. Oh, I hope she’s alright!” Kuki said. Brittany looked up at them,
“You guys are right, you can’t tell Abby about this. She’d be furious. This seems like it’s bigger than even we anticipated and she’ll be livid that you didn’t tell her sooner.”
“Eh…livid?” Wally asked. Brittany gave a soft smile and sighed,
“Really, really, really mad, Numbuh 4,” she said. She hadn’t talked to them much since her “decommissioning,” and she’d honestly missed them.
“Look, I’m going to go back to the video and try to analyze it in more detail. I can talk to the TND scientists about trying to break the encoding or something. If it really is from outer space….from beyond the confines of space and time even, there has to be a clue in the coding of the video itself somewhere,” she said.
“W-what about us? What do we do?” Wally asked. The girl stood up and put her hands on her hips.
“You guys keep trying to see if you can re-establish contact with Lizzie….NO! No wait, don’t. ….Whatever this danger is…the GKND is probably tracking any signals they can pick up on. …..Go by Lizzie’s house here and see if she’s there.”
“But…how can she be there if we just talked to her in space?” Kuki asked. Brittany tilted her head and smiled,
“Guys…we’re dealing with ALIENS here. This ain’t your normal KND mission. Just give it a shot, huh? See if she’s home and confront her about it. Maybe she can give us more insight into what the heck’s going on,” the girl said. Wally and Kuki hopped off the couch as Brittany made her way to the door. They followed her warily.
“We’re really sorry, Brittany,” Kuki said. The teen waved her hand dismissively.
“Guys, don’t worry about it. And it’s Numbuh 4-7-teen. Speaking of which, you can’t tell ANYONE about the Teens Next Door. It’s a real hush-hush thing, okay?” she asked, closing one eye and putting a finger to her lips. Kuki giggled and did the same. Wally rolled his eyes.
“Oh great, even MORE secrets,” he said. The girl smirked evilly before picking up the small Aussie and giving him a big hug.
“AH! Cruddy fangirl, LEMME GO!” Wally cried.
“You didn’t think I’d let you get away without getting a hug from you now, did you?” she asked, laughing. Kuki giggled.
“KUKI! Get this cruddy girl off of me!” he cried. Brittany laughed and kissed his head before sitting him down and patting his back. Wally brushed invisible dust from his clothes and straightened his shirt.
“You girls are all crazy!” he groaned. Kuki giggled and took his arm.
“C’mon, Wally!” she said.
“You guys be careful! I’ll be in touch, okay?” she said. Kuki waved back at her cheerily as she pulled Wally along. Once they were out of sighed, Brittany’s face turned serious.
“Man…I think we’re actually in some deep shizz…” she said, looking up at the sky.
“Nigel, what did you do?” ----- End
