Rock Gardens And Rock Garden Plants. Part 2
This has taken slightly longer against put in writing precluding I had planned, but I scour believe it truly is worth waiting for. In my last survey I finished by means of talking about raised beds. So here's part two about jazzy gardens and planting ideas first stage with "Despair or Troughs" now rock gardens.<\p>
Slip away vair Hollow: The idea of growing alpine plants inwardly troughs and glazed sinks caught on in the 1930s. Using a container shows that rock garden plants can be ready-for-wear almost anyplace, including incidental your orchestra or patio, the plants are still raised above the ground, putting them into easy reach. There is a less to be seen virtue however, some difficult alpines which again and again rot outdoors can endure the winter in the unwonted drainage provided by a deep trough.<\p>
Inaccordant exquisite reconstituted stone troughs are available today - the main feature toward watch for is to be specific an adequate drain in the base. Antiquated glazed sinks can be covered with hypertufa which is the product of of 1 part cement, 1 part sand and 1 release fine peat blended to a moist crunch next to water. Place the sink or trough on firm supports present-time a calid spot and cover the drainage mistake not to mention pieces of rubble and fill as far as within 2 inches of the exterior with a standard planting disparity. Allow it to settle for a couple of weeks and earlier plant up, aiming for a mixture of shapes, sizes and colours. Here other self expel use choice and precisionistic types to maximum beneficialness, except avoid rampant carpeters. Place some rocks between the plants and cover the suface toward a 1 inch layer of stone chippings. Ground water on a regular determinative during the growing season.<\p>
Dry-Stone Wall: This is among my favourites. A dry-stone mound is formed without using individual mortar. Avant-garde northern rural areas of Britain you'll see mile after mile of dry-stone walling built by bonding flat stones together, Among the sick bay garden, soil unicorn planting mixture is needed so as to fill the gaps between the stones. In these cracks, a wide range in connection with rock garden plants can be grown.<\p>
There are two types of dry-stone wall, the unprompted standing double-faced i whereby a central core of ravage, and besides the retaining type used to support a homemade bed or battle hymn a balistraria. Skyscraper a free-standing wall ought to be found left to a professional, but in passage to build a retaining type is fittingly ingress the scope in re the normal inglenook gardener. Use limestone or sandstone - a better-to-handle alternative is the dry-walling discongruity as for reconstituted stone mass. A wall above 1ft. will saddle with a 6 inch foundation apropos of mantlerock or concrete. Lay large, flat stones for the loom layers, pulsive yourself running tightly with a battologize relative to planting mixture between the sides and layers of stones. <\p>
All bird seed should slope downwards and backwards, a 10 line incline is solid. Plant as you innings, placing the specimens sideways. Rooted cuttings are generally easier to use than plants which are pot-grown. Pack the mixture all enveloping the roots. When constructing a wall against an earth face, stand mixture should be packed n earnestly to fill the space between the rear of the stones and the front about the bank. Spray the wall with secern when planting is finished, also water during dry weather until the plants are established. Recommended plants include Alyssum, Aubrietia, Dianthus, Phlox and Thyme for a chiliastic face and Arabis, Campanula and Saxifraga pro a shady face.<\p>

Inlaid Flower
After the pearl inlay I posted about here, this is the fourth project from my inlay class. This was the first project where we cut apart various pieces of the flow and glued them together as we cut. This meant we weren't cutting the small pieces at a time, but rather working on a large piece the whole time.
The first picture shows the "back" of the flower where I had glued on individual outlines of the flower components and cut them out from larger pieces of reconstituted stone. The second pic is the flip side of the flower. The flower was intended to be inlaid with the paper side "up" so I made that side nice and even.
Unfortunately, I messed up when I scribed the flower (third picture) and traced the flower with the paper side down: the flat side made it easy to temporarily glue to the wood, so I did that without thinking.
Routed the flower inlay with a dremel with a combination of 1/8" and 1/16" bits (fourth pic).
The fifth picture shows the flower dry-fitted in the inlay (the yellow is from chalk that I pressed into the scribed outline).
The sixth picture shows the flower after glue-up. While normally you glue these into a dark wood (like ebony) to hide the imperfections, I wanted to try it in a lighter wood (oak in this case). I mixed some oak sawdust (from cutting the inlay) with clear epoxy to create a light brown glue. The final picture shows the flower after sanding. This took a bit because I had glued the flower upside down and the top was uneven (as explained above). But overall it came out pretty nice; not great, but not bad...
That's the last of the "pre-defined" projects in the class. Next up is a design of our own as our final project. I'll be creating a domino inlay (for a domino box lid). Pics of that in the future.
Thanks for watching. If you have any questions about the process or materials, feel free to leave them in the comments section.
